Africa's Giant Free-Trade Area Gets Down to the Hard Work

The African Continental Free Trade Area has always been described in superlatives: the world's largest free-trade zone by number of countries, a single market linking some 1.4 billion people and a combined economy worth more than $3.4 trillion. In 2026, the story is finally shifting from soaring ambition to the harder, less glamorous business of making it work.
The scale of buy-in is remarkable. Nearly all 55 African Union member states — every one bar Eritrea — have signed the agreement, and 49 have ratified it. But signatures and ratifications are the easy part; the real test is whether goods can actually move across borders under the deal's preferential terms.
Progress is being made where it counts. Negotiations on rules of origin — the technical criteria that determine whether a product qualifies for lower tariffs — have been completed and approved, while tariff offers are still being hammered out. Crucially, more than 40 countries are now issuing AfCFTA Certificates of Origin, the paperwork that lets a shipment claim preferential treatment at a border post.
The political muscle behind implementation has been strengthened too. A Heads of State committee chaired by Kenya's President William Ruto, inaugurated early in the year, now carries the mandate to keep pressure on the countries lagging behind. The obstacles are formidable: the AU estimates that logistics costs can swallow up to 40 percent of a product's price in some African markets, compared with under 10 percent in advanced economies.
That gap is precisely what the free-trade area exists to close. Intra-African trade has long been stunted by tariffs, bureaucracy and poor infrastructure. Turning a landmark treaty into cheaper, faster commerce across the continent is the grind that will determine whether the AfCFTA's vast promise is ever realised.
