Ahmad Hardy returning for Missouri: Star RB set for season debut after recovering from gunshot wound

The Missouri backfield is getting major reinforcements for the home stretch, as star running back Ahmad Hardy will make his season debut on Saturday against Arkansas, sources confirmed to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz.
Back in May, Hardy suffered a gunshot wound while attending a concert in Mississippi. The rehab and recovery sidelined Hardy for Missouri's first seven games of the season, but he's been cleared to get back on the field this weekend.
Earlier this week, coach Eli Drinkwitz announced on social media that Hardy returned to practice but didn't commit to his game status. On Wednesday night, Hardy wasn't listed on the Tigers' SEC availability report, which was an indication that he would be good to go against the Razorbacks.
That's a huge boost for the Missouri offense coming out of the open date because Hardy was one of the best running backs in the country last season. In 2025, Hardy ranked second in the country and first among Power Four running backs with 1,649 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns.
While Hardy has worked his way back, Jamal Roberts took over as the No. 1 option in the Missouri backfield, and he's thrived in that role. Roberts is eighth nationally with 867 rushing yards, and he's tied for 11th with eight rushing touchdowns.
Two-headed monster in Columbia
With all due respect to Arkansas, Missouri probably doesn't need Hardy at full speed to beat the Razorbacks, but what if the team could get him ramped up for the home stretch in November?
After this weekend, Missouri faces a three-game stretch that includes Texas, Georgia and Kentucky. Two of those defenses are elite, and the Wildcats are no pushover. The Tigers will need their offensie firing on all cylinders if they want to go on a late-season run.
Roberts has already been great for Missouri this season, but the rushing attack as a whole has been rather pedestrian. The Tigers are averaging just 161.3 rushing yards per game, which ranks ninth in the conference. Throw a healthy Hardy into the rotation, and that number should improve because no team will have a better one-two punch in the backfield.
With Hardy working as the lead back in 2025, Missouri ranked 22nd in EPA per rush and sixth in yards per rush. This fall, the Tigers rank 121st and 74h in those categories, respectively.
The addition of Hardy should allow Missouri to keepp Roberts fresh -- and vice versa. That explosive duo might allow the Tigers to wear down opponents over the course of four quarters. Pair a rejuvenated rushing attack with a passing game that has thrived with Austin Simmons at quarterback, and the Tigers become a very dangerous team.
