Nigeria Begins Commonwealth Games Training Camp in Asaba with 32 Athletes

A total of 32 Nigerian athletes, consisting of 16 men and 16 women, have commenced a six-week camping exercise in Asaba, Delta State. This training phase is part of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria's (AFN) build-up program for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The participants were selected from various track and field disciplines, including throws, jumps, relays, and sprints. The camp aims to enhance the athletes' technical execution, foster team cohesion, and improve overall fitness levels before they compete on the international stage.
Training sessions and performance evaluations are being managed by a six-man technical crew. This team is led by AFN Head Coach Solomon Aliyu, while AFN Technical Director Gabriel Okon is coordinating the technical framework and monitoring athlete compliance with federation standards.
Chief Tonobok Okowa, the President of the AFN, stated that the six-week program is intended to identify athletes who are in peak condition. He expressed optimism that the Asaba camp will sharpen the competitive edge of the athletes and position Team Nigeria for podium success.
This preparation follows the national trials held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, which served as the mandatory selection event for athletes seeking a place on the national roster.
