Actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana was arrested for allegedly driving at 198 km/h on the N2 near Scottburgh in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team from Park Rynie arrested her along the N2. Mqokiyana made her first appearance at Scottburgh Magistrate's Court on October 19. She is due to return on Wednesday. The Department of Transport alleged she was driving a BMW X3 SUV and was clocked at 198 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.
Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said RTI will have no mercy this festive season, as demonstrated during October’s transport month. He said Mqokiyana's arrest reminds all motorists that the #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation is still in full swing.
He said for the period October 15 to 21, both the RTI and Operation Shanela teams had achieved the following successes:
●87 motorists charged for driving without driver's licences
.●141 motorists charged for not wearing seatbelts.
●112 unlicensed vehicles were identified
●140 vehicles impounded, as they had no permits.
Duma said his team would execute more than 26 #NenzaniLaEzweni Multidisciplinary operations until October 28.
“We will have a further 15 operations focusing on drunk driving,” he warned.
Mqokiyana is the daughter of well-known soccer coach Manqoba Mnqqithi. She became famous for playing the character of Ntwenhle in Isibaya from 2018 to 2021, and also starred as Amogelang in the second season of Abomama and as Sizakele in Uzalo.
Mqokiyana also apparently has business interests in construction and poultry farming.
