AU renews call for unconditional lifting of sanctions on Zimbabwe

Story by ZBC Reporter

THE African Union (AU) Commission has renewed its call for the immediate and unconditional lifting of unilateral sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe, warning that the restrictions continue to undermine the country’s socioeconomic development.

In a statement, AU Commission Chairperson, His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed concern over the impact of the sanctions on Zimbabwe’s access to international financial systems, foreign direct investment and development assistance.

The statement said the restrictions had increased the cost of doing business and constrained Zimbabwe’s efforts to mobilise resources for national development.

The AU Commission Chairperson said the sanctions also undermined progress towards Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030, the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) regional macroeconomic convergence and integration targets, the AU’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Mr Youssouf reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to supporting Zimbabwe’s efforts to mobilise international support for the removal of the sanctions.
