Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 PS5 Ports Now Official, Launching in July
Treyarch has revealed the PS5 ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are a real thing, confirming they'll be releasing next month thanks to the work of Iron Galaxy.
In a very low-key announcement done on social media, the developer simply said: "It's official: the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are being ported to PlayStation in July, courtesy of our partners at Iron Galaxy."
No final release date was confirmed as part of the Treyarch announcement.
The casual nature of the unveiling should probably give you a good indicator of what to expect from the two PS5 ports in July. In other words, I wouldn't expect these new versions to be anything other than what shipped on PS3, only now accessible in native PS5 versions. It doesn't sound like these are remasters or anything like that.
Lending further weight to that is the fact Treyarch highlights these ports are for PlayStation only — there's no Xbox Series X|S version. This is because the two titles are already playable on the Xbox systems via backwards compatibility. As such, the PlayStation versions are probably going to match what's available there.
Nevertheless, the first two Black Ops games represent some of the best Call of Duty experiences. Treyarch confirms both titles will come with their single player campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes.
A quick trip down memory lane while you wait for Modern Warfare 4 or something to invest in over the summer months, these two Black Ops entries are considered FPS classics for a reason — they were stellar at the time.
Iron Galaxy is the studio putting in the work to port the two games to PS5, having previously done the conversions for the likes of Diablo 3, Overwatch, Fallout 76, and many more. You can view its full portfolio of work through the link.
Will you play Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 in July? Let us know in the comments below.

Honestly, weirdly quite cool? Genuinely decent games and including the campaign, multiplayer and zombies of both games is a lot of content. Just don’t let Iron Galaxy develop any new content, I haven’t forgiven them for THPS4!
![]()
Well it looks like I'll be coming out of Cod retirement for some Black Ops1, it's kinda strange of them bringing this out before MW4.
![]()
If it comes with all the zombies maps then I'd probably buy it on sale.
![]()
I may pick these up on a sale for zombies mode. If there is gyro aiming.
![]()
Will these be playable in split screen?
I miss that feature in the more recent Call of Duty games. The older ones had couch co-op multiplayer.
I hope these are not the ps3 versions. Don't fancy the vasoline in my eyes and unstable fps.
![]()
More PS3 era games coming over is always welcome regardless of it been Cod.
Ill give these a miss

Meanwhile, several studios are burning down at Xbox, and the suits say to themselves, “It’s sort of ugly listening to all this chaos. You know what would make us more money? Porting old CoD games to PS5.”
![]()
@AdamNovice To be fair, COD was still a respectable series when black ops 1 came out. Black Ops 2 was probably the last time it was such or the start of the series going downhill.
![]()
@Haruki_NLI Yes, was expecting that these efforts were mainly made to bring CoD soon to Switch 2, and PS5 (and PS4?) being just a by-product.
![]()
@RawnDawn they have to come with all the zombies maps. No way do they make the dlc a separate purchase on ps3 ports. What is interesting is that most of these zombies maps are available on BO3 which was given away with the launch ps5, so will these versions become the de facto way to play zombies on ps going forward or will the players eventually migrate back to bo3?
![]()
having the multiplayer is HUGE, I may have to take the dip, thought I would never say about a CoD ever again...
![]()
Honestly really interested in buying these depending on how they go about them. Bo1 and 2 days were some of the best and I'd like to relive them a little lol
![]()
@Haruki_NLI Pretty sure this has been heavily rumored for Switch 2 for about a month now.
90% sure they're coming to S2. Probably going to be announced during a Partner Showcase in the next few weeks. Or randomly on Nintendo's socials.
EDIT: Correction, it appears all the Switch related rumors were just speculation based on leaked info about the PS5 ports. So maybe not. Still don't see why they wouldn't, so I'll temper my certainty down to a 60%.
![]()
@TheFakulty I’d like to think these at least have a solid fps on ps5 even if there’s no other improvements. Could be wrong though!
![]()
If Black Ops 1 has SP and MP i would be extremely tempted....at a decent price
![]()
Blops 2 was one of the most hilariously embarrassing campaigns I ever witnessed, but y'all do you I guess.
Hopefully these won’t be £70 each. If it is a blops 1 and 2 bundle with all the dlc for £70 it’s a day one purchase.
![]()
@LikelySatan I agree, Blops 1 is were that series starts and ends with me.
Iron Galaxy will probably ruin it like they ruined the Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4 Remake...
Feels like a waste not to port it to everything and have the only change be Cross-Play on new servers. They're Backwards Compatible on Xbox, but the Multiplayer experience is awful because of hackers.
![]()
consOomers are to blame for this. y’all really ain’t tired of being sold (old) games that you can already play?
wasted time and resources. this is why 7th gen will always be the best gen. way too many remasters and rehashing old games 👎
![]()
@shoeses why port it when people are willing to buy what they already have again? blame the ps4 era for not being backwards compatible.
![]()
With MW4 releasing in a few months, you'd think Activision would finally release Modern Warfare 3 Remastered and complete the original Captain Price trilogy.
![]()
Black Ops 1 and 2 multiplayer AGAIN?! Ugh…. And I quit COD a couple years back…
![]()
@shoeses surely due to the seismic shift in the gameplay loop from BLOPS1 to BLOPS2. In BLOPS1 it's cutscene, shoot enemies mid-screen, walk forward, cutscene, walk forward, shoot enemies mid-screen, cutscene. In BLOPS2, it's cutscene, shoot enemies mid-screen, walk forward, cutscene, shoot enemies mid-screen, cutscene, walk forward.
I was wondering if Switch 1/2 would get things. Their other COD games haven't done much so offer Black Ops 1 and 2 because nostalgia, of course why not. XD It's a bit pathetic.
I'll keep playing my 'left behind' shooters with more compelling mechanics as they interest me more. I gave Black Ops 1 and 2 a try and went eh they are good but I don't care to play them that much they don't hold my interest.
But yeah July, I'll support Rhythm Heaven Groove, not sure the other games in July, Black Ops will drown out July for people I guess that's always a great idea.
![]()
@PloverNutter Hopefully it does, would be cool to go back to those zombie maps. Some of my favorites.
![]()
Absolutely wild that these games aren't getting a resolution bump at least 🤦🏻♂️ Modern consoles can EASILY handle them at 4K60. I have both games on my Xbox and they sure look rough 😵
![]()
Definitely interested if MP is there, I think it’s great for them to bring back older cods for those of us who don’t buy the new games anymore but would like a platinum run again at an older one as well as some MP
Bring back the old MW2 please!
Remember there ports not Remasters don't expect much
![]()
depending on price I may be tempted
![]()
Maybe at 50 for both otherwise not worth the money. I hope they put something on the disc and this time ill check what the install size is first. I'm not going going to delete a ***** load to play this.
![]()
@LikelySatan Or pay €70 for a map editor set of missions. 😆
![]()
high school reunion for BO1 players!! I'm down. As long as its not more than £50
@omadeli Also I didn't realise you could play 360 games on Xbox series, obviously there's some 'technical' reason we can't on PS4/5
![]()
@rat-paradise The technical reason is that those supported games(, it’s not all games) have been recompiled into Xbox one versions. They aren’t actually 360 games in that technical sense as they have had resolution and frame rate increases too and you can’t play them from disc despite omadeli’s suggestion - they are key discs only.
Doing the same on ps3 isn’t practical as anything using the Cell SPU’s properly would be very time consuming and difficult to translate. You have to do a proper port. The main cores of the 360 and ps3 are actually closer than most people think (powerpc) , it’s the extra bits on the Cell chip that are the issue.
![]()
@LowDefAl ah okay, thanks. I guess they wouldn't need to buy it twice like we do. Yes it sounds like it would be time consuming and difficult, however a bunch of volunteers have already done it for Windows, Mac, Linux and FreeBSD, I'm sure Sony could manage
![]()
@rat-paradise not to disparage those impressive efforts but brute force emulation, which isn’t accurate enough and the high threshold for accuracy an official solution would require are very different things.
The Xbox solution is very impressive but it was a simpler problem more easily solved by just throwing an entire department at it. The ps3 problem is a much bigger task to do, especially if you want it to work for a bulk of the library and well enough to be an official solution.
What works as a community project with caveats and compatibility lists won’t work for a console
![]()
@omadeli 100% with you there!
![]()
That's great news! I will be able to play Black Ops 2, finally.
![]()
Everyone sounding happy until they get online and get wall banged across map 10 times 🤣 played when they brought back the servers and everyone jumped back on other year on Xbox n some were ok but theyre were plenty of hackers still 🤣😭
![]()
will they release it on disc or we have to download like all their other releases on PS5 this gen?
![]()
@Decimateh-xblz yeah this happened to me with BO3, hopefully they disable crossplay
