Can we play you every week? The day Southend toppled Man United

Twenty years ago, Southend United sent shockwaves through English football as they dumped Manchester United out of the Carling Cup.
A stunning 30-yard free-kick from Freddy Eastwood clinched victory over Sir Alex Ferguson's star-studded side featuring Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, who were top of the Premier League.
It sparked elation both in the stands and on the pitch at Roots Hall as the struggling Shrimpers, who were bottom of the Championship, progressed to the quarter-finals.
Those involved in Southend's fairytale cup run have relived the club's finest hour with BBC Essex in a four-part podcast.
It was billed as an irresistible David v Goliath match-up: Lowly Southend against the world famous Manchester United in the fourth round of the cup.
Sir Alex made nine changes but still fielded 10 internationals in an attempt to avoid slipping up, with 11,532 fans cramming into Roots Hall to see a potential upset.
Darren Fletcher, Alan Smith and Gabriel Heinze were among the stars to play alongside Ronaldo and Rooney in what was a £58.75m line-up.
"We saw the teamsheet and you do fear the worst," admits Steve Tilson, who was Southend manager on the night.
Goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan recalls first learning of the Red Devils' starting 11 over the stadium's loudspeaker.
"I always remember my goalkeeping coach at the time, Lee Turner, coming up to me and just whispering in my ear, 'I think you're going to be busy tonight, mate'," he says.
Yet despite the odds stacked in their favour, Jon Champion, who commentated on the game, recalls Sir Alex's men looking uncomfortable at the old-school Roots Hall.
"I remember looking at some of them - who'd clearly never seen anything quite like this before in their football careers - and they did look like fish out of water," he says.
Buoyed by an electric atmosphere near the seaside, the side with nothing to lose made a fierce start.
When Jamal Campbell-Ryce was fouled 30 yards from goal in the 27th minute, history was about to be made.
Boyhood United fan Freddy Eastwood had twice before trialled for the Red Devils. He stood over the free-kick with Steven Hammell.
"I said to Stevie just before I hit the ball, 'No, I'm taking it because I'm going to score'," Eastwood reminisces.
Southend's top-scorer arrowed the ball past the Manchester United wall and into the top corner.
"There was just an explosion of noise as the net rippled," Champion says.
"It was a dawning realisation that a very special moment was unfolding."
For Tilson, it began an agonising wait for the full-time whistle: "You look at your watch and you think, 'It's a long time to go. Are we going to be able to hold on?'."
United responded with force, but heroics from Flahavan to twice deny Ronaldo - who went on to be crowned the world's best footballer five times - helped to keep the Old Trafford side at bay.
"I knew it was going to be a big night for me and a night I wanted to do myself justice," Flahavan says.
Eastwood adds: "Ronaldo was everywhere, he was shooting from everywhere – they just didn't get the goal."
"The longer the game goes on and you get down to the last five minutes, you hope and pray you can pull it off," says Tilson.
Referee Uriah Rennie's final whistle prompted scenes of jubilation inside Roots Hall as the home side won 1-0.
Among the overjoyed fans was legendary singer Alison Moyet, who, such was the high demand, had called in a favour from Tilson for a ticket after he recently watched her perform.
The Southend Echo reported selling a record-breaking number of newspapers the next day, leading to it being reprinted.
Journalists from the nation's media had all desperately pursued the man at the centre of it all for an interview.
"I was getting chased all over the place, I don't think I even went home that night," Eastwood remembers.
"We had a night out the night after and celebrated it properly, because after the game we just couldn't get out the stadium.
"There were so many fans, everyone was so full of joy."
Southend were to continue wrestling against the Premier League elite, as they drew Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the quarter-final.
The establishment-defying Shrimpers took Spurs to extra-time and came within five minutes of a penalty shootout, but for a winning Jermain Defoe goal.
Manchester United, meanwhile, went on to win the Premier League and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Tilson, of course, will never forget what his team did against that great side.
"It wasn't a case of we were hanging on for 90 minutes," he insists.
"We played some good football and I thought we thoroughly deserved the win in the end."
