National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader Fadiel Adams has challenged Cape Town safety and security Mayco member JP Smith to undergo a public drug test, citing rumours of alleged cocaine use. Smith dismissed the challenge and hit back at Adams over allegations concerning his party’s funding.

In a Facebook video posted on Sunday morning, Adams questioned whether Smith used cocaine and called for him to take a public drug test.

“Cape Town must know, bru, are you on coke or not? The rumours are getting louder and louder. This man is in charge of our safety and security and he is making very erratic decisions by spending millions on k*k, sitting in debates and lying, accusing me of whatever without any proof,” Adams said.

“We cannot have a sheriff who is suspected, or may even be, using cocaine. I challenge him to a public drug test,” he added.

Adams said the test would be conducted publicly, with both men providing samples and waiting for the results.

“Here is your opportunity to literally come clean if you can. I promise you it won't be a debate. We walk in and pee in a potjie, allow the results to be ready and walk out,” he said.

Smith dismissed the challenge when approached by Daily Voice.

“I don't comment on this imbecile. You should ask him rather for comment on the claims of his former members that he took money from gangsters to fund his party,” Smith said.

The exchange comes amid allegations that Adams approached a lawyer reportedly known for representing gangsters after his arrest by the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in May.

Adams accused the Democratic Alliance (DA) of orchestrating the allegations. He denied approaching the lawyer, saying he had not spoken to him before the lawyer offered to represent him.

Adams also said he could not afford the lawyer’s fees, flights to KwaZulu-Natal and accommodation, and subsequently appointed local lawyers.

Adams was arrested and taken to KwaZulu-Natal, where he faces three counts of fraud and two of defeating the ends of justice over allegations linked to interviews and recordings of awaiting-trial prisoners at Westville Correctional Centre.

On 15 May, the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court granted Adams bail of R10 000, subject to conditions that included reporting to Mitchells Plain police station twice a week.

This is not the first time Adams has challenged a DA figure to undergo a public drug test.

He previously challenged DA social media personality and Ward 111 candidate Cedric Laguma during a live Facebook debate hosted by Cape Flats Stories.
