The court heard chilling testimony on Tuesday from the first doctor who treated Chantal Pasqualle-Hoorn after she was rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital, with medical evidence painting a grim picture of a woman suffering from extensive bruising and signs of a significant brain injury.

Taking the stand in the Western Cape High Court, currently sitting in the Wynberg Regional Court, Dr Tim Giles detailed Pasqualle-Hoorn's condition when she arrived at the hospital on June 28, 2024, just hours after she had allegedly been assaulted by her husband Duncan Hoorn.

Hoorn has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, murder and defeating the administration of justice.

Giles, a medical doctor with ten years' experience and currently employed as a general surgery registrar at Groote Schuur Hospital, told the court he was the senior doctor on duty in the trauma unit when Pasqualle-Hoorn arrived on the morning of June 28, 2024.

He explained that nursing staff immediately alerted him to her condition and that he instructed them to immediately take her directly to the resuscitation room.
