Durban City’s flying start under Tinkler faces ultimate test in Gavin Hunt reunion
Gaston Sirino netted one of Durban City's goals in the 3-0 CAF Confed Cup clash against AS Port Louis 2000 that took Erik Tinkler's team to the group stages for the first time.
The new-manager bounce is rarely this emphatic. In mere weeks at the helm of Durban City, Eric Tinkler has revitalised a side that had grown blunt in the final third, steering the Citizens into the CAF Confederation Cup group stages for the first time in the club's history.
Now, that free-scoring momentum collides with one of South African football’s most enduring tacticians – and a familiar face to the home faithful. On Wednesday night, Tinkler’s men host Gavin Hunt’s Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout round of 16 at Chatsworth Stadium, setting up a clash loaded with personal history, past grudges, and genuine knockout pedigree.
When Tinkler succeeded Khalil Ben Youssef, City were defensively sound but struggled to convert possession into goals. Ben Youssef’s conservative tenure was defined by low-scoring encounters, averaging roughly a single goal per match. Under Tinkler, those shackles have vanished.
The Citizens booked their historic continental group-stage berth with a ruthless 6-1 aggregate demolition of Mauritian outfit AS Port Louis 2000. Capped by Sunday’s 3-0 second-leg win at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex, Gaston Sirino, Haashim Domingo, and Ethan Brooks all got on the scoresheet. It marked six goals across two preliminary matches under Tinkler, immediately showcasing an attacking variety missing earlier in the campaign.
Tinkler acknowledged the achievement after Sunday’s triumph, calling it a proud moment for the club, the players, and the technical team in their first-ever continental campaign.
“I’m very pleased with the performance. We came here knowing we had a job to do, despite winning the first leg, and the players approached the game with the right mentality. We were disciplined, clinical in front of goal and managed the game well,” said Tinkler.
However, he was quick to remind everyone that more work lies directly ahead.
“This is a very important achievement for Durban City FC. It’s our first-ever continental campaign, and reaching the group stages is a proud moment for the Club, the players, the technical team and everyone who has supported us. We’re delighted, but we also know there is more work ahead,” he said.
That immediate hurdle comes in the form of Hunt, who had his own stint in the Durban City dugout before parting ways with the club. Hunt took charge of Stellenbosch and has wasted little time stamping his signature durability on the Winelands outfit. Under his watch, Stellies have developed into an exceptionally stubborn unit, arriving in KwaZulu-Natal on the back of a four-match unbeaten league run where they conceded just two goals across more than 360 minutes of football.
The tactical contrast could not be sharper. City’s explosive transition play under Tinkler faces a Stellies side comfortable absorbing sustained pressure, as proven earlier this month when they earned a gritty 1–1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
Adding another layer of drama to Wednesday’s tie is the managerial duel itself. Tinkler and Hunt share decades of top-flight rivalry, having locked horns in major domestic cup finals and league battles across their storied careers. Both coaches know what it takes to navigate knockout pressure, and Hunt knows the Chatsworth surroundings and several members of this City squad intimately from his time at the club.
Sunday afternoon in Mauritius was a historic milestone for Durban City. Wednesday night at Chatsworth will reveal whether Tinkler's free-scoring revival can crack open Hunt’s trademark resilience when a quarter-final place is on the line.
