Durban weather warning: Level 4 alert issued for severe thunderstorms
eThekwini Municipality has placed disaster management teams on standby as a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms, heavy downpours, hail and lightning puts residents at risk of flooding and property damage.
Residents in eThekwini are being urged to take precautions as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issues a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms, with heavy downpours, hail and severe lightning expected.
The warning is valid from 12pm until 10:59pm, with the forecast conditions potentially causing flooding in settlements, on roads and bridges, as well as damage to property and infrastructure.
The eThekwini Municipality said its Disaster Management and Emergency Services teams were on standby to respond to weather-related incidents across the city.
Vincent Ngubane, director of the eThekwini Disaster Management Directorate, urged residents, particularly those in low-lying areas and informal settlements, to take the warning seriously and avoid unnecessary travel from midday.
“Our teams have been placed on standby and are ready to respond to any weather-related incidents across the city,” Ngubane said.
The expected thunderstorms could create hazardous conditions for residents and motorists, with heavy downpours posing a risk of flooding in settlements and on roads and bridges.
The municipality warned that the weather could also damage property and infrastructure and create poor driving conditions.
Residents have been urged to stay indoors and off the roads where possible while the warning remains in effect.
Ngubane also cautioned residents against attempting to cross flooded roads or rivers.
“We urge residents, particularly those in low-lying areas and informal settlements, to take this warning seriously, avoid unnecessary travel from midday, and never attempt to cross flooded rivers or roads. Your safety must come first,” he said.
The municipality has advised residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their property during the expected severe weather:
Stay indoors: Stay indoors and off the roads where possible.
Avoid floodwater: Never cross rivers, streams, or roads where water is above ankle height.
Move to higher ground: If trapped during a flood, abandon your vehicle and move to higher ground.
Protect valuables: Move valuables above the expected flood level.
Keep children safe: Keep children away from rivers and stormwater drains.
Avoid lightning risks: Stay away from open spaces and tall trees during lightning.
Residents have been urged to follow the municipality's official platforms for weather updates and further information.
Anyone requiring emergency assistance can contact the Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.
