Ex-IDAC boss Andrea Johnson and Feroz Khan granted bail

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has granted former IDAC head Advocate Andrea Johnson and former Major-General Feroz Khan bail of R10,000 each.

Former Independent Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnson and former police major-general Feroz Khan have been released on R10,000 bail each following their arrest over allegations linked to defeating the ends of justice and arrest warrants.

The pair appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, where their case was postponed to February 2 for further investigation.

Their arrests on Friday morning follow allegations that Johnson shared confidential information from a criminal complaint against Khan, potentially compromising the investigation.

Crime Intelligence officer Manana Leonora Phetlhe, who accused him of harassment and assault.

It is alleged that Khan was allowed to review Phetlhe’s account before preparing his warning statement, potentially giving him an advantage in responding to the allegations.

The controversy has also come under scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where former Hawks colonel Kobus Roelofse raised serious concerns about the handling of the investigation.

Roelofse, a former senior Hawks investigator, testified in Pretoria on July 10 that Johnson had allegedly interfered in a 2018 criminal complaint against Khan.

He argued that her alleged involvement compromised the investigation and undermined the integrity of the criminal justice process.

Khan’s arrest comes after his dismissal from the South African Police Service (SAPS), following his failure to appear before the designated senior officer overseeing an expedited disciplinary process.

Johnson resigned as IDAC head in July after coming under intense scrutiny during the commission's proceedings.

Her testimony followed allegations that IDAC had operated outside its legal mandate and pursued a criminal case against Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo and other senior intelligence officials.

The commission also heard allegations that Johnson and Khan maintained a close personal relationship that extended beyond their professional association, placing their interactions under further scrutiny.
