Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco and Kenya have kept Africa’s hopes alive after navigating the group stage, but the challenge becomes even tougher in the knockout rounds, where there is no room for a slip-up.
Morocco and Ghana will be the first African teams in action on Wednesday, taking on defending champions DPR Korea and Argentina respectively. Nigeria’s Flamingos and Kenya will follow on Thursday, with Mexico and Japan standing between them and a place in the quarter-finals.
With all four African representatives facing demanding assignments, the continent will be hoping its young stars can rise to the occasion and extend their World Cup journeys.
Morocco, Ghana face tough tests on Wednesday
Hosts Morocco will face a major examination of their credentials when they take on DPR Korea at 4:00 PM West Africa Time on Wednesday.
The Koreans have been among the standout teams in the competition, making the fixture a difficult assignment for the Atlas Lionesses, who will be eager to make their home advantage count and keep their title ambitions alive.
Ghana will also be aiming to continue Africa’s push for the quarter-finals when they meet Argentina at 7:00 PM WAT.

The Black Maidens must produce a disciplined performance against the South Americans, with their hopes of progressing depending on how effectively they handle the pressure of knockout football.
The other fixtures on Wednesday will see Germany face Venezuela at 4:00 PM, while Brazil take on Poland at 7:00 PM.
Flamingos target Quarter-Final ticket against Mexico
Nigeria’s Flamingos will return to action on Thursday, 29 October, when they face Mexico in a decisive Round of 16 encounter scheduled for 4:00 PM WAT.
Head coach Akeem Busari and his players will know that their campaign is entering a critical phase, with victory required to secure a place among the tournament’s final eight.
The Flamingos will need to turn its attacking opportunities into goals while maintaining the concentration and discipline required to survive a knockout contest.
Mexico, meanwhile, will be determined to halt Nigeria’s progress and book their own quarter-final place, setting up a potentially demanding encounter for the West African side.
For the Flamingos, the stakes are clear: win and advance, or see their World Cup campaign come to an end.
Kenya face Japan as Africa’s hoes continue
Kenya will also have a difficult assignment on Thursday when they take on Japan at 7:00 PM WAT.
The East Africans will be looking to extend their historic campaign, but Japan’s technical quality and organisation are likely to test them throughout the contest.
Kenya will need to combine defensive discipline with an effective attacking approach if they are to overcome their opponents and secure a quarter-final berth.
Elsewhere on Thursday, China PR will face France at 4:00 PM WAT, while Spain take on the United States at 7:00 PM.
Thursday’s Round of 16 Fixtures

Four African Nations, one big Mission
The presence of Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco and Kenya in the Round of 16 gives Africa four opportunities to strengthen its representation in the latter stages of the tournament.
However, reaching the knockout phase is only part of the task. Each side must now deliver when it matters most, with a single defeat ending its pursuit of the trophy.
Morocco and Ghana will attempt to make the first statement on Wednesday before the focus shifts to Nigeria and Kenya a day later.
For Nigeria in particular, the meeting with Mexico offers the Flamingos an opportunity to move closer to their ambition of competing for the title. But they must first negotiate a difficult knockout fixture against opponents with the same objective.
As the battle for the quarter-finals unfolds in Morocco, African football fans will be watching closely to see how many of the continent’s four representatives can take the next step.
Can the Flamingos, Black Maidens, Atlas Lionesses and Kenya all reach the quarter-finals, or will the knockout stage bring heartbreak for some of Africa’s young hopefuls?
Only time, will tell.
