The Jigawa State Government has approved N273.29 million for the construction of 20 greenhouses across 10 local government areas to boost youth livelihoods, the Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa, has said

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday at the Government House in Dutse, Musa disclosed that the decision was reached at the State Executive Council meeting held on Monday, June 22, 2026, and chaired by Governor Umar Namadi.

“Mr. Governor and council members approved the award of contract for the construction of 20 Greenhouses, Type II, in 10 LGAs at a total cost of N273,293,272.50,” Musa told reporters.

“The project leverages agrarian strength of state to create jobs, food security,” the commissioner said.

He highlighted that the project aligns with Jigawa’s agrarian nature and the administration’s drive for modern farming.

“This is part of sustained efforts to promote youth empowerment, modern agricultural practices, and sustainable livelihood opportunities across Jigawa State,” the commissioner said.

The 10 beneficiary LGAs are Birnin Kudu, Gumel, Kafin Hausa, Kiyawa, Kirikasamma, Jahun, Malam Madori, Roni, Taura and Sule Tankarkar, Musa confirmed.

According to him, the greenhouses will build on training already received by 82 youths from the state.

“The project is designed to scale up and consolidate the extensive training received by 82 youths in modern soilless farming techniques at the Soilless Farm Lab in Abeokuta,” Musa stated.

He said the facilities will provide the trained youths with practical platforms to apply their skills.

“The greenhouse facilities will provide practical platforms for trained beneficiaries to apply the knowledge and skills acquired, particularly in controlled-environment agriculture and high-value crop production,” he noted.

Musa said the greenhouses will operate year-round and help improve food supply.

“The greenhouses are expected to serve as centres for year-round agricultural production and enhance food security,” the commissioner explained.

He added that the project will also spur business opportunities and generate income for young people.

“It will promote agribusiness entrepreneurship and create sustainable income-generating opportunities for young people across the state,” Musa said.

The Commissioner further stated that the project would improve beneficiaries’ living standards.

“The project will contribute to improving the living standards of beneficiaries by equipping them with practical skills and access to modern farming technologies,” he said.

In another major decision, the council also approved compensation for traders and residents affected by development projects, Musa disclosed.

He said N337,365,450.00 was approved for shop owners affected by the remodelling of Kafin Hausa Market.

“Council approved payment of compensation to shop owners affected by the remodeling of Kafin Hausa Market,” Musa told journalists.

Another N757,286,297.50 was approved for structures affected by the construction of Doko and Dangyatin township roads, he added.

“Council also approved compensation of structures affected by the construction of Doko and Dangyatin township roads,” the commissioner said.

Musa stressed the government’s commitment to balancing development with citizens’ welfare.

“Council stated its commitment to implementing development projects in a manner that protects the interests and livelihoods of affected communities while advancing overall welfare,” he said.

He explained that both approvals demonstrate Namadi’s focus on youth, agriculture and inclusive development.

“These decisions reflect the administration’s priority to empower youths and ensure no one is left behind in the development process,” Musa stated.

The commissioner noted that the greenhouse project could become a model for youth-driven agribusiness in northern Nigeria.Agricultural experts have long highlighted greenhouses as game changers for farming activities and agribusinesses, especially in agrarian states like Jigawa.

Experts note that controlled-environment agriculture increases yields, enables year-round production of high-value crops, and reduces crop losses from pests and adverse weather, providing farmers with a steady income while creating value-chain jobs in input supply, packaging, marketing, and processing.

PUNCH Online gathered that Jigawa continues to face unemployment challenges. National Bureau of Statistics data showed the state’s unemployment rate stood at 23.1 per cent as of 2023, while earlier NBS reports placed the state’s combined unemployment and underemployment rate at 80 per cent.
