Jimmy Nevis brings music, love and loss to Baxter Theatre in ‘Roses & Thorns’
Jimmy Nevis' "Roses & Thorns" returns to the stage in a new setting.
Cape Town singer-songwriter Jimmy Nevis is bringing his music to the stage in a production that explores love, loss, violence, family and hope, as Roses & Thorns returns for a one-night performance at the Baxter Theatre.
The six-time SAMA-nominated artist will perform on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 8pm, combining songs from his 14-year catalogue with theatrical storytelling, cinematic visuals and a six-piece live band.
Following its debut earlier this year, the production returns in a new setting, offering audiences a different way to experience Nevis’s music through four distinct stories brought to life by award-winning stage and television actor Dean Smith.
Rooted in Cape Town, Roses & Thorns draws on Nevis’s identity and lived experience as a coloured man, exploring personal experiences and the realities of the communities around him.
The production combines contemporary South African pop and R&B with character-driven storytelling, using four distinct characters to add new layers of meaning to Nevis’s songs.
The performance brings together live music, theatre and visual elements to create an experience that goes beyond a conventional concert.
“Roses & Thorns is about the things we carry, the experiences that shape us and the different sides of ourselves that we don't always show the world,” Nevis said.
“I'm excited to bring the production to The Baxter and share this experience with audiences in a space that allows us to explore music and storytelling together.”
Nevis is the creator, performer and producer of Roses & Thorns. The production also features director and scriptwriter Kim Blanché Adonis, associate producer and scriptwriter Daniel Mpilo May Richards, and musical director and producer Darren Petersen.
Together, the creative team brings music and theatre into conversation, using live performance and storytelling to explore experiences of love, loss, family and hope.
With its combination of live instrumentation, theatrical narratives and cinematic visuals, Roses & Thorns offers audiences a fresh perspective on Nevis’s music and the stories behind it.
The production takes place at the Baxter Theatre on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 8pm.
