Kane breaks record as England knock DR Congo out of World Cup

England reached the last 16 of the World Cup with a 2-0 win over DR Congo, as captain Harry Kane made history by becoming his country's all-time leading scorer at the tournament.
Kane's goal took him past England's previous World Cup record, adding another milestone to a prolific international career. Jude Bellingham sealed the victory with a second-half strike, capping a controlled performance against the African side.
For DR Congo, the defeat ended a memorable campaign. The central African nation had returned to the World Cup and made history earlier in the tournament, including scoring their first-ever goal at the finals, but came up short against one of the pre-tournament favourites in the knockout round.
The result continued a mixed knockout stage for African teams at the expanded 2026 World Cup, with some sides bowing out even as others pressed on toward the later rounds.
England, seeking to go one better than their recent near-misses at major tournaments, advanced to face the winner of another last-32 tie. Their blend of experience and emerging young talent will be tested as the competition intensifies.
