Kenyans Mark Two Years Since Deadly Gen Z Protests
Kenyans gathered in Nairobi and other cities on June 25 to mark two years since at least 60 people were killed during anti-government protests driven by anger over tax hikes and the rising cost of living.
The demonstrations, led largely by young people, became a defining moment in the country's recent political history. To mark the anniversary, the Kenyan government announced it would begin compensating nearly 2,000 people who suffered human rights abuses during the protests.
The reparations programme represents an official acknowledgement of the harm done during the unrest. Tensions over economic pressures and protest rights have remained close to the surface since.
Earlier this month, a protester was shot and killed during separate demonstrations, a reminder of how fraught the relationship between the state and demonstrators remains.
