Kenya’s Kitirua Plains Lodge Grounds Its Design in the Savanna

Unfolding across a 128-acre private concession on the edge of Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, Kitirua Plains Lodge opens against a backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro and sweeping savannas.
Designed by Luxury Frontiers for A&K Sanctuary, the property maintains a light physical and visual footprint, dispersing its structures to leave the surrounding ecosystem undisturbed.
The lodge features 11 standard guest suites, a spacious family unit with a semi-enclosed courtyard, and an exclusive-use GK Suite nestled atop a natural hill. Each suite is equipped with a king-size bed, generous bathroom with a freestanding tub, indoor and outdoor showers, and a covered veranda.
Through extensive view and solar studies, every structure is placed to perfectly frame Mount Kilimanjaro in the early morning. “Each guest is offered a front-row seat to Amboseli’s ever-changing drama,” Luxury Frontiers creative director Anomien Smith points out.
Anchoring the guest experience, the main social spaces include a hilltop lookout, traditional open-air boma, and private dining accessed via a sculptural spiral staircase. The Explorers Lounge, a hallmark of the brand, showcases a dedicated Map Room with archival maps and curated artifacts.
For relaxation, a serene wellness area offers treatment rooms, pedicure stations, an open-air yoga deck, and a gym overlooking the plains.
Inspired by Maasai principles of living in harmony with nature, the lodge’s soft, organic forms follow the natural contours of the site. Curved walls and fluid rooflines, inspired by traditional mud construction, allow the built environment to move with the undulating terrain. Rather than relying on the conventional tented typology, the design utilizes locally quarried stone blocks and textured plaster blended with site soil, shifting in tone with the surrounding earth.
“The materials are an extension of the land itself—we worked with Amboseli’s natural palette so that the lodge does not sit on the landscape but emerges from it,” says Smith.
Inside, a calming palette of beige and soft green reflects the grasslands. Natural textures ground the spaces, pairing textured clay plaster, soft green stucco, and mottled steel with green onyx accents. Locally sourced Mazeras stone runs underfoot, while handcrafted Kenyan mango wood furniture, cypress decking, beaded pendants, and woven grass artwork celebrate regional artisanal traditions.
The lodge is also fully solar-powered and relies heavily on passive cooling, rainwater harvesting, and local integration.
