Suspended EMPD acting chief, Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi, has declined to respond to claims linking him to a rogue operation that allegedly resulted in the theft of precious stones worth R14.9 million.

Appearing before the Madlanga Commission on Wednesday, Mkhwanazi requested additional time to consult with his legal team before addressing claims made against him by his former girlfriend, known as Witness K.

Mkhwanazi told the commission he had spent recent days preparing for his disciplinary hearing and had not yet had an opportunity to study the transcripts of Witness K's testimony, in which he is implicated.

He suggested that he may instead provide a written statement in response to the allegations.

His request comes after Witness K, a JMPD inspector, delivered damning testimony before the commission, claiming she participated in an unlawful operation in Rosebank in 2023 that led to the theft of precious stones.

During her testimony, Witness K described how the operation was allegedly executed and directly implicated Mkhwanazi, placing him at the centre of one of the commission's revelations to date.

The allegations have intensified scrutiny on Mkhwanazi as the commission continues to investigate claims of misconduct and criminality involving law enforcement officials.

The inquiry is underway.
