‘My party lost the elections’: KZN motorist breaks down after drunk driving arrest
KZN motorist arrested for drunk driving blames party’s election defeat.
A man arrested for drunk driving broke down in tears and blamed his political party’s loss in the local government elections for his decision to drink and drive.
The man was arrested during a Nenzani La Ezweni operation in Greytown on Friday.
The incident was highlighted by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport as authorities intensify efforts to combat drunk driving ahead of the festive season.
In a video posted by the department, the motorist is seen crying uncontrollably when confronted following his arrest, citing his party’s electoral defeat as the main reason for his behaviour.
The department said more than 7 110 motorists have been arrested since the launch of the Nenzani La Ezweni Operation.
Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) would accelerate the operation as the province prepares for the festive season.
The operation is aimed at addressing dangerous driving behaviour and improving road safety as traffic volumes increase during the holiday period.
Authorities have repeatedly warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol, cautioning that impaired driving puts the lives of drivers, passengers and other road users at risk.
The department urged motorists to exercise responsibility on the roads and avoid drinking and driving.
