Nine reported killings fuel fears of extortion-linked violence in Grabouw

Residents raised their safety concerns during a community meeting at Gerald Wright Community Hall late last month.

At least nine people were reportedly murdered in Grabouw during October 2026, raising fears that extortion related violence is taking hold in the Overberg town, where spaza shop owners have now agreed to close their businesses by 8pm.

The wave of violence has sparked growing concern among residents, with police intensifying operations to curb the bloodshed and bring those responsible to justice.

While police have been unable to confirm the exact number of extortion-related killings during October, they say at least 10 arrests have been made.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Frederick van Wyk told IOL Media that some incidents were already being investigated by the dedicated Provincial Extortion Team.

“Some of the incidents are suspected to be extortion-related and those identified cases are under investigation by the dedicated Provincial Extortion Team. Investigations are ongoing, and SAPS is pursuing all available leads to bring those responsible to justice.”

Van Wyk said police visibility had been intensified through vehicle and foot patrols, checkpoints and stop-and-search operations targeting illegal firearms, ammunition, dangerous weapons, stolen property, drugs and persons of interest.

“Currently, 10 suspects have been arrested on several charges and three firearms confiscated,” he confirmed.

He said police had also held meetings with spaza shop owners, resulting in an agreement that all shops would close by 8pm.

“Extortion awareness campaigns and community prayer services have also been conducted, while the free extortion hotline has been widely publicised,” Van Wyk said.

He said the station commander personally led community safety patrols every weekend, with participation from various stakeholders.

“SAPS is working closely with Theewaterskloof Law Enforcement, Theewaterskloof Traffic Services, Provincial Traffic, private security companies, Neighbourhood Watches, CPF, EMS, Grabouw Day Hospital and Farm Watch.”

Meanwhile, the Grabouw Community Policing Forum (CPF) has cautioned residents against spreading fake news and unverified reports about community shutdowns and alleged shootings.

Residents were urged to verify information with Grabouw police before sharing it on social media.

The CPF also encouraged residents to report suspicious persons, vehicles and criminal activities to police.

“Remember you can remain anonymous and do not have to give your name or address,” the CPF said.

Earlier, rumours circulated of a planned shutdown in Grabouw on Monday, 19 October 2026.

In a message issued on 18 October, the station commander said there was no confirmed intelligence indicating that a shutdown affecting Grabouw was planned.

“Residents are urged to remain calm, continue with their daily activities, and refrain from spreading unverified information on social media, as this may cause unnecessary panic and uncertainty,” the station commander said in the message shared by the CPF.

Police say they will continue monitoring the situation and taking appropriate measures to ensure residents’ safety.
