No cash for the car guard? Major retailer rolls out national Appreciation Voucher
Pick n Pay recently rolled out its appreciation voucher to support car guards and other volunteers providing supplementary services to its customers
Pick n Pay has launched a nationwide Appreciation Voucher programme that allows customers to tip or thank people who provide everyday services without having to draw cash.
The initiative responds to the rapid shift toward electronic payments in South Africa and the practical difficulties this creates for both customers and informal workers.
The vouchers are available in R5, R10 and R20 denominations and can be purchased at till points in Pick n Pay stores countrywide. Customers simply add them to their grocery bill and hand them to car guards or others as a token of appreciation. Recipients can later redeem the vouchers for groceries at any Pick n Pay store nationwide. Each voucher is valid for three years.
The rules are designed for simplicity and control. Customers can buy multiple vouchers in a single transaction. Each voucher must be redeemed in full during one transaction, and the shopping basket value must equal or exceed the voucher amount. No change is given, and the vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash. Lost vouchers cannot be reprinted or replaced, so recipients are advised to treat them with the same care as physical money.
Pick n Pay has positioned the product as a practical alternative in situations where customers want to show gratitude but no longer carry notes or coins, and where recipients cannot easily accept digital payments such as QR codes.
“Appreciation Vouchers give customers another way to say thank you when they don’t have cash on hand,” the retailer said. “For customers who want to recognise the people who help them throughout the day, the voucher offers a practical alternative to cash and another way to say thank you.”
The programme grew out of a successful initiative at the Pick n Pay Steenberg Village franchise store in Cape Town. There, the store introduced R5 food stamps that customers could purchase and give to car guards. The guards collected the stamps and redeemed them for groceries when needed. Positive feedback from both customers and recipients convinced Pick n Pay to expand the concept nationally.
This bottom-up origin is notable in a retail environment where many new products are designed centrally. The Steenberg Village experiment demonstrated both customer demand and operational feasibility before the company committed to a full national rollout.
South Africa’s steady move away from cash has created a structural challenge for tipping culture. A study by the South African Reserve Bank found that roughly 29% of respondents prefer to make payments exclusively electronically, while another 31% prefer digital transactions but remain comfortable using cash. Only 19% said they exclusively prefer cash.
The decline in physical cash has been particularly noticeable for informal workers such as car guards, who traditionally rely on small tips. While electronic payments are convenient for consumers, many recipients in the informal sector cannot accept digital payments.
Other solutions have emerged in the market, including wearable contactless devices and apps that allow digital tipping. Pick n Pay’s voucher model takes a different approach by converting a card or electronic payment at the till into a physical, grocery-redeemable instrument that requires no technology on the recipient’s side.
For Pick n Pay, the programme turns a customer friction point into a service offering. It removes a common awkward moment at the end of a shopping trip and potentially encourages customers to keep a few vouchers on hand. Since the vouchers are redeemed only at Pick n Pay stores, the system also creates a direct link between tipping activity and future store traffic.
For recipients, the vouchers offer a reliable way to convert tips into food and household essentials with nationwide usability and a long validity period. In a country where many people depend on informal work and tips for income, the initiative provides a structured alternative to the declining availability of cash tips.
The programme is currently available at till points nationwide. Its combination of low denominations, multi-year validity, full-redemption rules and nationwide acceptance keeps the system straightforward for stores, customers and recipients alike, while addressing a real operational gap created by South Africa’s ongoing shift toward cashless payments.
