NPA rejects Jub Jub’s bid to avoid prosecution as firearm case goes ahead
Jub Jub to face prosecution after NPA rejects legal representations
Media personality Molemo Katleho Maarohanye, popularly known as Jub Jub, has suffered a setback in his attempt to have his criminal case resolved outside the court system, after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) rejected his representations seeking an alternative dispute resolution.
The NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Gauteng, Johannesburg considered submissions made by Maarohanye’s legal team but found sufficient evidence and reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution.
The decision means the criminal proceedings against the Uyajola 9/9 presenter will continue.
Mohlatlole said Maarohanye appeared before the Germiston Regional Court, where his legal representative indicated an intention to escalate the representations to the Office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).
The matter was postponed to November 23, 2026, for the outcome of the representations to the national office.
The charges against Maarohanye stem from an incident involving an e-hailing driver in Edenvale on June 14, 2026.
The incident allegedly occurred shortly after 7.30am when the driver dropped off a female passenger at a residence in Edenvale.
Police alleged that Maarohanye confronted the driver, accusing him of being romantically involved with his girlfriend.
The situation allegedly escalated when the driver was forced into a vehicle and prevented from leaving. The suspect reportedly discharged a firearm in the driver's direction.
The driver managed to escape unharmed and drove to a nearby police station to report the incident.
Police subsequently arrested Maarohanye. During the investigation, law enforcement officials searched his residence and seized a pellet gun.
He faces charges of discharging a firearm in a public place and pointing anything likely to lead a person to believe that it is a firearm.
Following his arrest, Maarohanye approached the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg with an urgent application over delays in his first court appearance.
On June 16, the High Court granted the application and ordered his release on R5,000 bail.
In a previous interview outside the Germiston Magistrate's Court, Maarohanye denied the firearm allegations, insisting that there was no gun.
“There's no gun,” he told journalists, while maintaining that he was an accused person who would have to answer to the allegations.
The case subsequently went through several postponements to allow investigations to be completed and the State to prepare its case.
In August, the NPA confirmed that it was ready to proceed with the prosecution. It later indicated that investigations had been finalised and that the State was preparing to move forward with the matter.
The NPA's latest decision to reject Maarohanye's representations reinforces its position that the matter should be determined through the criminal justice system.
The prosecuting authority said its decisions were guided by available evidence and applicable law, without fear, favour or prejudice.
Maarohanye is expected back in the Germiston Regional Court on November 23, 2026.
