NYC Schools Mandate Bias Review for All AI Tools
The New York City Department of Education has issued preliminary guidance that any artificial intelligence tool intended for use within its schools must first clear a bias and equity review. This requirement applies across the district’s network, which serves roughly 1.1 million students.
The department plans to publish a full compliance playbook in June 2026, outlining the procedures schools must follow to meet the new standards. The move aims to ensure that emerging technologies do not perpetuate inequities in the city’s education system.
