Ounahi Fires Morocco Past Canada and Into the World Cup Quarter-Finals

Morocco marched into the World Cup quarter-finals and back into history on Saturday, dismantling co-hosts Canada 3-0 in Houston to become the first African nation ever to reach the last eight of the tournament more than once.
The hero was Azzedine Ounahi, whose second-half brace broke Canadian resistance and settled a tie that Morocco had controlled for long stretches. Soufiane Rahimi added a late third to put gloss on a commanding performance, one that carried the Atlas Lions through to a quarter-final meeting with France.
For Morocco, this is familiar but no less thrilling territory. Four years after they became the first African and Arab side to reach a World Cup semi-final, this team has served notice that the last run was no fluke. 'We are no longer a surprise,' coach Ouahbi said afterwards. 'Now when people talk about Morocco we are a major contender, and it is a great source of pride.'
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou framed the achievement in continental terms. 'We are so proud to represent Africa because it's a continent with a lot of talent,' he said. 'Africa deserves to be at the best level in football.' His words land at a tournament where nine African teams reached the knockouts, a record showing that Morocco now leads from the front.
For Canada, the defeat ends a landmark home campaign. A nation whose men's team had never won a World Cup match before this tournament reached the last 16 on home soil, and became the first co-host eliminated — a painful exit, but part of a run that will be remembered. Morocco, meanwhile, march on, carrying a continent's hopes into a blockbuster quarter-final against the French.
