Poll: Will You Be Replaying Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Before The Remake Arrives?
Sitting in our Monday meeting, a theme emerged when answering the standard question, "Play any games over the weekend?"
Following on from last week's announcement (and months of rumours), we've all got Ocarina of Time on the brain. Jim and Ollie have been replaying via NSO, and the rest of us have only resisted the urge thanks to other games on the docket or life getting in the way.
It's the same whenever a new Zelda is announced. I remember how the upcoming release of Tears of the Kingdom sent us back into the cellars to quench our thirst on a previous vintage. I never finished that Skyward Sword HD playthrough, but I put a good 20 hours into it, and it got me in the mood. It's only natural!
And yet, without knowing the exact form the upcoming Ocarina remake will take, it presents a poser: To replay or not replay? Despite our natural urges for a draught of Hyrule's finest, we're split on our replay plans over at Nintendo Life Towers.
For some of us (well, for me, at least), a Zelda game is such an event that we tend not to replay them often. Over the years, I've gone back and run through the Young Link section in Ocarina several times — just to revisit Lake Hylia in the morning, for instance — but my only 100% replay came with the 3DS remaster in 2011. For whatever reason, these games stand apart from others for me, feeling more like historic moments I don't want to relive ad nauseam. I treasure them and then file them away in the memory banks.
But for others, these are comfort games like any other, as approachable and replayable on any given Sunday as a Jurassic Park rewatch or taking a favourite book from the shelf. Jim replays Ocarina every year.
This topic bleeds into previous discussions about what we all want from a (now-not-hypothetical) Ocarina remake. I would far prefer a total, REmake-style overhaul, myself. A paintover might work for Star Fox, but Ocarina? That deserves the most premium of premium treatment.
Then again, past evidence suggests something much more faithful than Capcom's reimaginings; when it comes to remakes, Nintendo tends to follow the original blueprint closely. And murmurs based on NOA's website blurb, which described the upcoming remake as "Ocarina of Time with stunning visuals, updated designs, and timeless gameplay", also suggest a more straightforward, 1:1 reworking.
At this stage, with so little revealed, it's impossible to have an informed opinion - we'll just have to wait until Nintendo pulls back the curtain and gives us more than a glimpse of the boy without a fairy.
And let's be absolutely clear: I will be playing this regardless. The opportunity to show my kids an updated Ocarina, possibly even recapturing some of that wonder from 1998, will be an experience to treasure, whatever its form. With that in mind, I won't be replaying any old versions beforehand.
But what about you? Have you already started a playthrough? Are you saving yourself until the looking-at-the-slate-probably-November release? Have you, in fact, never played Ocarina of Time? Let us know in the poll and comments.
Will you be playing Ocarina of Time before the Switch 2 remake comes out? (2,831 votes)
And speaking of never having played Ocarina, former NL video producer and fine fellow Felix Sanchez played Ocarina for the first time just a few years ago and chronicled his NSO journey in a series of live streams. Check them out below if you fancy dipping back in but can't commit to a full run yourself:
![]()
Probably is the most likely answer for me though I am more likely to do another randomiser run.
![]()
I recently played it last year, so I kind of did, but that doesn't fit any of the options! I'm not going to play it a second time in about a year before the remake, no, but very glad to have played it relatively close to this version!
![]()
Nah. Why spoil it?
![]()
Absolutely not. Just as I'm not playing Star Fox 64 before the remake for that! I want to experience them like a kid again (well...a kid with a couple decades of knowledge of the originals 😖...leave me alone).
![]()
I'm currently stuck between "Nooo, I want to go in totally fresh" and "Yes! I will (re)play the 3DS remake". So I went with "Maybe - I haven't decided yet". It highly depends on how my backlog looks after this summer.
I'd like to try the N64 original (or NSO rom) at some point, but that won't be until I finally cave for the NSO+ tier for GameCube games.
![]()
The remake looks terrible so far with its overdone Unreal graphics so I would just play the 3DS one which is the best option.
![]()
I've not played it since 1998.
So I'm looking forward to the remake.
![]()
I missed the N64 by a couple years, and have only played through the 3DS version. That didn't stop it from becoming one of my favorite games, so I'd gladly give the original a go. I think I'll just save it for after the remake in case I'm not happy with that and need a way to reexperience the game properly.
![]()
I'll be lucky to have finished A Link to the Past by then.
![]()
I'm a firm "maybe". I was in the middle of a 3ds playthrough a while back and dropped it (for something shiny, probably). I may pick it back up between now and then.
![]()
Probably not for me. I had a tradition of replaying OoT,MM or LttP on my birthday for over a decade so I’m good. Trying to escape the nostalgia quicksand and beat games I have not touched or new games. I am still looking forward to this new version (same as link’s awakening) and will play through again then. That being said, I may look through some of my old Zelda books. Reading isn’t on my no repeats blackout.
(might be a good excuse to play master quest though…)
![]()
@dazzleshell same here, I have forgotten more than I remember, so I’m excited to re-experience it.
I played it for something like the 32nd time a year ago so I will just wait. I am not sure that counts as "going in totally fresh" for me though 😄
![]()
Replay? All these years I've commited the crime/sin (depending on who you ask) of not playing it to completion, about 20 years ago I made it to the inside of a whale or something and called it quits for some reason. Probably because it was during a visit to some uncles.
By the point I stopped playing, Link still was Young Link.
Despite having access to 3 different releases (Ocarina of Time + Master Quest on GC; Zelda Collector's Edition, also on GC; and NSO), I still haven't played it. I promise I'll play it eventually, be it one of those three versions or the Switch 2 remake.
What a ludicrous idea! Not having played it in years is a gift, why would you waste that?
Who knew 99% of the readers of a Nintendo news site would be so disinterested in entertaining even the mere idea of replaying Nintendo's finest game? 😂 "I quit the game by the third dungeon 20 years ago," "I like Ocarina of Time but I have pretty much no desire to replay it," "I can't play it because it isn't 60fps," "I've not played it since 1998," ice cold stuff. It's like taking to a Da Vinci forum and declaring with pride that one has only looked at the Mona Lisa (whether online, in print, or in-person) once in the past thirty years.
![]()
I am one of the fortunate few who has only played Ocarina to completion once. That means I don’t remember the solutions to any of the dungeons, and I want to keep it that way assuming this is a one-to-one faithful remake. If it’s not, that’s cool too; I might actually replay it soon if they confirm it’s more of a FF7 situation.
![]()
Waiting for the new version. I haven't beat it since I had the GameCube disc 20+ years ago. I tried to do a playthrough on my New 3DS XL toward the end of the last decade, but just find the form factor too uncomfortable for long play sessions. So I'm really happy to be getting an updated version I can play on the TV.
Why would we...? I have played it three times already, I think it's enough.
I'm ready for the remake!
![]()
I played the N64 game on Wii U. I thought it was good but i won't replay it. May as well wait for the remake.
![]()
Not playing it again before then... backlog TOO HUGE!
I have it on N46, GameCube, and 3DS. When I get a Switch 2, I'll add it to the collection, lol.
![]()
Nope, going in fresh. I haven't played it since it came out on the Wii U eShop and I barely played it then. I look forward to updated visuals, if nothing else!
![]()
Most likely no because I'll eventually replay it on my channel for sure (and this time finish the original version, have only fully played the 3DS one), but I doubt I'll get to it in time considering that even just when it comes to Zelda games I haven't played A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening yet - even leaving that aside, I usually prefer going in "fresh"... relatively speaking as I'm so familiar with the original anyway considering the previous times I've played it myself, how much I've read about it, watched randomized playthroughs etc.!
![]()
OoT is one of my most replayed games. I recently played through the original N64 cartridge on my Analogue 3D. Late last year I played through the 3DS version again. The next time I play will be the remake. I can hardly wait!
![]()
I replayed OoT on N64 a year ago and I did a blind playthrough of Majora’s Mask this year. I’m good.
![]()
I've replayed this game probably more than any other. While it'll be fun to compare back and forth at some point, I'd rather go into this remake as fresh as possible. Want to avoid getting burned out on it.
Of course first I'll need to buy a Switch 2...
![]()
No, played it too many times already.
Not sure i will play the new one, unless it feels new in more ways than just the graphics.
![]()
I just finished it today lol. Somehow I grabbed 3ds version back on its launch but never played it myself (still some friends played it tho). I've not done any of the optional things, just rushed the main plot so I have untouched content to do for the remake. First time playing it and apart of camera issues it doesn't feel that old lol.
![]()
Replaying it right before the remake comes out sounds like it would make the playthrough of the remake less fun.
Also, I have played through this game enough times that I don't really need a refresher.
![]()
I’ve replayed it enough since it released. My last play through was a couple years ago. I will hold off till this releases. I’ve probably completed OoT about 12 times by now if I had to guess.
![]()
Ordinarily I wouldn't for a straight remake—I haven't replayed Star Fox 64 since its remake's announcement, even though I play it a few times a year—but I'm going through some things right now*, and I can't rule out Ocarina of Time as some familiar low-thought comfort gaming while I deal with everything.
*No need for concern: the worst-case scenario is that the status quo will be maintained, but it's still rather stressful.
I can't see going back to the 3DS version (the only one I still have access to) when the new game is months away and will likely be the superior way to replay it.
![]()
I was planning on replaying it before the remake even leaked. Now that it's revealed I'm not quite sure whether I want to do it before or after the remake
I kinda want it to be as fresh as possible but at the same time, I want to get a quick reminder of how the game was and have the comparisons in my head as I'm playing thru the remake lol
![]()
@user350363 Hot takes for me here but I have no desire to replay OoT as I thought it was just okay. I get it revolutionised gaming but its not for me. I am excited for the remake though and if they fix what didn't click with me (which I can't quite put my finger on).
And also, the Mona Lisa is eh. In its defence I just don't understand the art world at all so there is no painting I have seen that invokes anything within me.
![]()
I have never played it, so I’ll skip the NSO version and await the remake’s release. I had switch from Nintendo to PlayStation in the N64 days so now I get to discover these gems for the first time in their upgraded form. Looking forward to Star Fox for the same reason.
![]()
I already started replaying it back when Nate the Hate leaked the remake. I'm about 85% of the way through it now.
Also, the Master Quest appears in the 3DS version as well. The GameCube isn't the only place to experience it.
![]()
I voted N64 original (through Switch N64 app, I can’t connect up my original N64 currently)….
But truly I’m torn between that or the 3DS remake. Loved the 3DS remake! Grezzo really impressed me there.
Might do N64 version then 3DS so I can compare them all……
Side note - also planning on replaying fable series before Fable releases next year. I’ve got A LOT of gaming to do!
I respect the "historical moment" sentiment. It makes sense. I don't tend to revisit things so much. I have meant to do a run through the Zelda series though and play any of the ones I've missed over the years.
I also want a big overhaul to the original. And honestly, it seems like they have to be doing that. To what extent a "big overhaul" means is probably subjective, but I don't think we're meant to just get a fresh coat of paint here. I could be wrong, for sure, but why deliver this buildup for a simple remaster? The way they teased it makes me think they've got something really special they want to share. I suppose they could just be pleased with suped-up graphics, but I think it's more. Why not just tell us that it was a remaster right off the bat? Remember how Metroid Prime 1 was just shadow-dropped the same day it was revealed. Star Fox is a remake, but they've added quite a bit. Plus, that feels different, because I think they're hoping to relaunch that franchise. I just don't think they would keep us guessing for just 4K textures and 60 FPS. How would you get away with that on the original game and act like it was some huge release in 2026? It is probably my favorite game ever, but it is certainly limited in scope and all that, compared to today's big titles. So, if they go, we need to make Hyrule Field bigger or livelier, then why would they stop there and not redo everything else? It wouldn't make sense to me for this kind of tease. I hope I'm right.
![]()
Replayed it around Christmas , as I have many many times since 1998 when it released. My excitement will be a little dulled if this ends up just being a graphics overhaul. Ocarina may just be that nostalgic for me, but I think the original holds up super well in every regard.
![]()
Might replay it a bit, haven't really played it on the analogue 3d yet, only put it to let it shows up in the library..... Don't th8nk i have time for a complete rerum with backlogs and work e5c..
![]()
I always play Ocarina of Time at least once a year, whether for a challenge run, randomizer, or even just another 100% run. Heck, I remember trying to do a permadeath run with only three hearts. If I used Nayru's love, I wouldn't have died to the Stalfos in Ganon's Tower. I did end up removing the permadeath limitation, since I was so close to the end, and that ended up being the only time I died that run, but I was so disappointed to have made it that far only to die so close to the end. Maybe I'll try the challenge again this year.
![]()
Playing through the game has become an Xmas tradition for me, so we'll see which version I'll be playing this Xmas! Excited for sure!
Liam Doolan, can you please add a page that tracks from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3 have been added to Mario Kart World's Free Roam on the Nintendo Music app last evening?
![]()
@Aquinas How can you say that, they haven't showed any footage yet
![]()
Definitely feeling the lure, it's just a question of fate. I'm not going to consciously decide one way or the other, I'm just going to let my gaming fancy do its thing.
Couldn't even tell you which version. I have them all and the hardware to play them, so it could even be a melange...
Tbh, I think i might be more inclined to play an existing copy soon, then buy the new version a bit later down the line. I don't think I need to Day 1 it, and I don't particularly want to encourage Nintendo to endlessly remake the same games.
![]()
I won't be replaying OoT. It's not the same kind of nostalgia for me as it is for a lot of people my age. I want to go in fresh and hope it won't be a 1-on-1 experience. Or at least refresh the controls a lot to make them more modern. I would still prefer a remake a lá Final Fantasy Remake. If we're not getting that, at least some QoL improvements and modernizations.
![]()
I'm not particularly interested in the remake. OOT was a good game, but I didn't grow up with it, so I don't have that nostalgia kick others have.
That being said, I did just find my GBA from childhood, and THAT gave me one hell of a nostalgia kick. I'm totally going to be replaying LttP on it sometime soon.
I voted "no, go in fresh" but really there needed to be a "No, because I've played it a billion times and could play it blindfolded" option.
![]()
I usually replay it once a year. Not for nostalgia reasons: I'm not very nostalgic. It's just a great game to replay.
I'm hoping the remake is basically a new game or reimagining. The original is amazing as it is. That includes those specific low-poly visuals.
So if they're going to go with this totally new art direction, they might as well go all the way. New layouts, new areas, etc. Don't compete with the original, complement it.
Kind of like Super Metroid, my favorite game, is a spiritual remake (as well as sequel) to the original Metroid, but also very, very different. They don't really compete. Metroid is all claustrophobia and loneliness and alieness. Super is cozy by comparison, more about exploration and self-expression.
Difference and variety, I say.
I already know the game by heart. I'm tempted to do another Randomizer run.
Where's the option for "I'd love to but I'm in the middle of four other games"? 😭
![]()
I am playing the Banjo Kazooie Jiggies of Time mod.... does that count?
![]()
Dunno yet. Last time I replayed it (3ds), I got to jabu jabu pretty quickly and then was just like nah princess I’m done carrying you around, and stopped there. I would love to do an analogue3d playthrough but I’ve never owned a copy for 64
![]()
Depends when the new version hits. If it's not until Christmas, maybe, I usually play it once every couple years and am due
![]()
Maybe? I don't think I will, but if the game ends up differing a lot from the original to the point that they may as well be two very different games that happen to share most of the same story, I may replay it. But will have to wait for more information on that one.
![]()
I replayed it on 3DS last year so I'm definitely going to wait until the remake releases!
![]()
Nope, sold my gold usa cart on ebay for a song to buy my Switch 2
No, I know the game by heart anyway.
The way I handle my backlog is by never playing remakes and remasters unless its something i have never played. So no, i wont be replaying or playing the remake. I will however play whenever the new zelda comes out
![]()
Played many times during the 64 era and since then I haven't touched it.
So I'll be waiting for the remake to play it again as fresh as it can be.
![]()
@PineappleLake They showed an extremely ugly sleeping Link with terrible proportions and an over-realistic art style. That is enough for me to not want to play it at all the way it looks like rubbish
![]()
Why the hell would I do that? I've played OoT far too many times already, and to play it again would only cause me to be disinterested in the remake.
![]()
Only if I can get my 3DS fixed before then
![]()
@Aquinas Deciding you don't want to play a game based on 2 seconds of a cutscene. What a reasonable take. Lol
![]()
Since one of my other comments on another OOT post and this one, I’ve realised I haven’t actually played and completed Ocarina of Time since 1998 so I’m now low key chill with it being a 1:1 remake with modern bells and whistles. I contemplated playing it again on NSO but I’m holding off now.
![]()
Hah, replaying it right now.
![]()
I play Ocarina every few years. I play Majora's Mask annually.
![]()
What about if the original is your least favorite game in the franchise but you're going to play it anyway
![]()
Does doing randomizer runs count? I do one of those every few months and they are so much fun!
![]()
If we really risk a 1:1 remake, I’ll definitely wait
![]()
Absolutely not. It's been over a decade since I've played through the game. I want it to hit me like it's 1998.
![]()
Nope. Haven't revisited OoT since the the 3DS remake. I play LoZ and ALTTP randomizers all the time. And if anything, I might replay BotW and TotK on my Switch 2 as my console has been tucked away in a storage case since Age of Imprisonment was released.
![]()
I had play and beat this game on every Nintendo console (N64 cart, GameCube discs, Wii VC, Wii U VC, 3DS cart, Switch NSO) I own so I am ready for the Switch 2 remake any time. I just hope that this remake surprise me with new stuffs.
![]()
@hayesdude Randomizers are the way to go. Greatly increases replayability of all of the early Zelda offerings.
![]()
@cvrator I highly recommend the LoZ Randomizer as well as the ALTTP randomizer.
![]()
I just replayed it last month
![]()
Nah my backlog is way too long to play the same game I’ve already played twice more.
![]()
I will be replaying the N64 original irrespectively. With my wife. We can't wait 🥳
![]()
I’ve played the 3DS version and Master Quest post-game to death as it was my introduction to the series, but never actually completed a playthrough of the N64 original! Planning to hopefully stream a playthrough of that on Twitch/YouTube in the near future and be able to fully appreciate it ahead of the new remake.
I love Ocarina but I've played it so many times that I don't have the desire to run through the original again. But, watch nostalgic video essays about it on Youtube while I play other games? And listen to various covers of the soundtrack? Absolutely.
And yes I'll most likely play the remake when it comes out, assuming it looks good when we see a real gameplay trailer. I just can't not buy every Zelda that comes out.
Having only been a Nintendo and Zelda player since the Switch 1 and BotW, I have never played Oot. Is it really as good as people say it is and should I play the original on NSO?
![]()
As I usually do, it's like a tradition of mine, I replayed OoT and MM at Christmas with the n64 on a crt tv with surrround audio
![]()
Replayed it a couple of weeks ago, not planning to get the remake.
@FuzzieGinge88 It is definitely worth playing the original on NSO. Ocarina Of Time has been widely considered to be the greatest video game ever made since it released in 1998. The 3DS remake, while great for the hardware it released for in 2011, made a number of changes that detract from the overall atmosphere. Lighting, pacing, character models, locations, etc. all deviate in ways both large and small from the original experience (which is something I anticipate happening with the Switch 2 remake, though I am remaining optimistic given how little has been shown so far). I would only recommend the original version of Ocarina Of Time if you have never played the game before.
![]()
One of my favourite games for years, but havent played it since maybe 15-20 years ago. Alot i dont remember now, so i Cant wait to go fresh into this on the remake! Not gonna play it before then.
![]()
Maybe. I never did finish the original game and there's a chance the new one could render it obsolete, so I might play it before that happens.
It's not that good to begin with......
![]()
No. I've played OoT so many times now whether it's the N64 original or the 3DS Remake I have no more interest at all. I envy those going in for the first time though as I wish I could erase my memories of this game and experience it for the first time again.
![]()
already played it this year
![]()
I've replayed it enough for a life time. I'm interested in playing the new remaster but I'd rather do it remembering the least possible about it
![]()
I want my kids to play it fresh without previous versions to influence them.
Otherwise I would dust off the 3DS version
I do remember my first use of the hookshot in kakariko village blew my mind. I hope they get a similar effect, but they’ve played skyward sword and twilight princess so it may have spoiled it.
Time probably hasn’t been the kindest, but it’s really too bad people can’t experience the wow that is playing OoT as one of the first semi open world 3D adventure game. Theres a reason it has 97 on metacritic, but this score is very much in the context of 1998 or whenever it released. This remake will never reach those heights in 2026 because the bones of the game have been reiterated to perfection through other games since then.
![]()
I'd like to replay it, but it kinda depends what this remake actually is. If it's 1:1 then I feel like replaying the N64 version would spoil my enjoyment as I'll have played the same game already so close to release.
Whereas if it's more of a reimagining then it would be good to replay the N64 version so I can better appreciate what they've changed.
I'm currently playing the original Final Fantasy VII as I'd like to have that fresh in my mind before I dive into the remake trilogy. I also just replayed StarFox 64 ahead of the new game.
Probably not, got too much stuff to play between now and November(likely when it comes out)
![]()
@Scarmucci Its a feature that I hope nintendo adds to the remake. It would be the perfect addition.
![]()
Remakes are only fun for me if it’s been awhile since I last played the original. Otherwise it’s just too much Deja vu.
![]()
Will probably dive in fresh. Its been a longgggg long ranch (time) when i last played this gem.
The Ocarina item should have stayed with Link. Its the best item ever. Adds so much magic and mystery to this game. Cant wait to get my hands on this one.
![]()
Absolutely not. Its probably my favorite game of all time but ive not played it in a few years and want to go in as fresh as i can.
why is there no option for randomizer? biased poll...
![]()
@Scarmucci you're preaching to the choir my friend (anyway, just because it's my least favorite doesn't mean I don't hold it in high regard:)
![]()
Nope. I've played the original and 3DS remake and that's enough. I feel like unless you grew up with this game (eg, played it on N64) its appeal is a bit limited. Breath of the Wild really pushed this series forward and it's hard to go back to the earlier style.
![]()
@bigpale honestly this was the option I was looking for but it just wasn’t there…
![]()
My answer is yes, on the 3DS, simply because I have a fairly late game save file that I want to finish.
![]()
I replayed it last year 100% so I’ll just wait for the remake.
![]()
Nope, but I will be replaying Wind Waker to fill the void until then ^_^
![]()
Nope, never truly owned a N64 and I’ve never played Ocarina. I bought the Gamecube LOZ Promo Disc years ago, and had all this time to play Ocarina on NSO, but never got around to it. I’ll wait and just play the remake, presumably during the Holidays.
I'm a weirdo who's more interested in the lore of LoZ than playing any of the actual games. (I say 'actual' games because I do enjoy the Warriors games.) My first and only experience with Zelda was a poor one, WWHD with the early stealth section, bad and stealth, babyraged, and never tried another game since.
![]()
@hayesdude Agreed, but not bloody likely. This is Nintendo we're talking about after all. Seoaking of, I would not be suprised with a Navi amiibo - although I am still disappointed we never got a Zelda amiibo with Echoes of Wisdom to match the Link's Awakening amiibo.
![]()
I actually just did very recently. I kind of wish I hadn't.
![]()
I'll play it, but only out of spite for the remake.
![]()
I already replayed it a few years ago and if I'm not gonna spend an hour to do another Star Fox 64 playthrough before the remake comes out, I'm certainly not spending 20 hours on OOT again before playing this version.
Though hilariously, I replayed Metroid Prime 3 months before the remaster was announced/released, that was funny timing. I actually waited a few months after buying the remaster to play it because of that.
I haven't played tha game in years. It was the first actual Nintendo console game I got together with The Wind Waker on the GameCube (the bonus disc). And have played the 3DS version.
But not really since. And so.. I will wait.
I'm currently replying Master Quest on 3DS.
First time I played Ocarina was in 98. Second play through was on 3DS launch. Now I'm playing Master Quest for the first time.
If new iteration is 1:1 with the original I'm not gonna triple dip.
![]()
I want to
But also i do not want to
But i want to
![]()
I don't think so. I want the remake to feel fresh, so I'm gonna go in with fresh eyes and mind.
![]()
I'm already in the middle of the 3ds remake, so why stop now?
![]()
Currently working through the library of games I have, so I won't have the time for replaying titles. Smash Ultimate was a recent exception, collected near 1100 spirits recently. However, I will always give a remake a playthrough!
![]()
I loved Ocarina of Time when it launched on Nintendo 64. But it's one of those games that did not age particularly well when it comes to controls and looks. So, I will not be playing it before the remake, but I do want to play the remake.
![]()
I didn’t see an option for “No, but I played it on N64 when it came out and then again on NSO in the switch era”
![]()
Will play it for the first time on a big TV, I’m treating it as a brand new game.
I’d already started a replay of it via the PC port on Steam Deck but fell off. Plan on finishing that off before the remake.
![]()
I completed it 11 days after release and then again for the first time since, last month. I’m really excited for the switch 2 release.
I don't have a Switch 2. So this will be a perfect opportunity.... to finally play OOT 3D which I have never player despiste owing 2 copies.
@Supadav03 It’s definitely worth playing the original. The remake will most likely not be as good as the original. And there’s a good chance it’ll basically be a completely different game like Final Fantasy 7 Remake or the Resident Evil remakes.
I always play Zelda games every winter. This year it was twilight princess and totk. Not going to touch Zelda until oot remake comes out. Then day 1 drop everything else to play.

@Durians I’ll eventually play the OG version, but It’ll be after the remake.

@nhSnork
Really? It’s not a very long game. Fastest time I ever beat it was under 9 hours. And I collected mostly everything on that run with the exception of a few pieces of heart.
Out of all the Zeldas, I think it is the best to replay. Once you know what to do in it you can kind of fly through it. But the challenge of its combat keeps it fresh.

@Durians
That’s not how Nintendo usually does Remakes. They usually stick pretty close to the original release. The only one I’d argue really went the reimagine route was Metroid Zero Mission on GBA. It’s a remake of Metroid 1 on NES but you only know that because the game spells it out to the opening text crawl. That said I completely get why they did what they did with Zero Mission. The original NES Metroid is just hard to play without much there by the standards of even 2004. Its sequels (especially Super Metroid) basically completely replaced it. So when Nintendo decided to remake it they kind of started from the ground up with it, only really using its basic story outline for its remake. Otherwise it was a reimagining. But that’s not how Nintendo usually does things.

It's missing the option "I played it so much already that I remember every single details of it".

Heck no. For me, the whole point of playing again on Switch 2 will be for a fresh and hopefully-slightly-modernised version of one of the greatest games of all time. I don't want my judgment to be too affected by a recent play-through of the original or 3DS version.
My personal hope is that it's a mostly faithful remake but with some seasoning sprinkled all around to fill the world a little more (de-barrenizing Hyrule Field is a good example), and with a rich orchestral version of the original score. That will naturally mean that it feels a bit stiff and linear compared to BOTW/TOTK, but that's the nature of OOT. If they just "let us climb everything," it would be a totally different kind of game.
This might even mean that it's not as objectively fun as BOTW/TOTK (once you taste that freedom, it's hard to go back), but I want a proper OOT experience, and that inherently means a linear story with many legacy gameplay elements.
So long as it's not like a lazy fan mod up-rezzing of the game (which it won't be), and has a beautiful and consistent art style which honours the tone and feel of OOT, and has an orchestral score, I'll be there with bells on come launch day, even if it's only a ~8/10 on Metacritic. I'm gonna guess that it ends up being a 8.5-ish game on Metacritic, held back from hall-of-fame reception by its need to stick within some legacy conventions.
It'll also be interesting to hear how young gamers enjoy it, if their only experience of Zelda has been BOTW/TOTK. What a time for them to be growing up… if I take off my nostalgia glasses, I think the Switch-era Zelda games would be the absolute best games to grow up with.
Super keen to see how Nintendo handles this one 👌 I'm confident that it will be a lovingly crafted homage to the original, and a beautiful experience all over again.

@Folkloner Ugly is ugly. Why would I want to suffer through hours and hours when sitting through a few seconds was so awful?
Hard pass. Maybe next Zelda game will have a non-AI-Unreal art style again.

I haven’t played it again in more than a decade, I can wait for the new experience. I still know all the major beats of course, but the details escape me.
@OrtadragoonX The OoT remake definitely looks like a reimagining. If it was going to be a faithful remake they would have showed something like the iconic intro recreated with modern graphics, just like how the Link’s Awakening remake reveal showed the faithfully recreated intro and some 1 to 1 gameplay. Everything they showed in the OoT remake reveal looks completely different from the original.
And as you said, Nintendo has done reimaginings before. Zero Mission and Samus Returns for 3DS. One could also argue A Link Between Worlds is a reimagining of A Link to the Past. Super Mario 64 DS is also quite different from the original.

I have not played since the 3ds one I did not finish it and my sd card in my 3ds had an issue so most of my saves got corrupted. So I will just wait for the remake. I have not completely gone through this game since the n64 version. So I might as well go in as fresh as I can even though I pretty much remember most of it still especially the music.
I don't want to go back.

@user350363 - To be fair, if you’ve already experienced everything you need to with a particular piece of art, there’s not much to pull you back, especially if you’ve tried, and were left with a lesser experience.
On top of that, the poll was asking if people were going to play the original before playing the remake (in other words, twice in one year), which is a bit more of an ask then, say, “do you imagine yourself ever replaying it?”.

As alluded to above, as much as I used to love the game, I don’t see the need for another playthrough, especially if I’m going straight to a remake afterwards. Perhaps my younger self would’ve been interested in comparing and contrasting the different versions, but now, I think I’ll content myself with the remake, maybe.

Eh, I’m not sure I will even play the remake. So far everything about it is pointing to a simple 1:1 remake, which I have zero interest in.
![]()
I played the N64 version briefly as a child but didnt get very far. I completed the 3DS version in 2022 and consider it an all-time classic. That playthrough is still fresh enough in my mind, so I'm just gonna jump straight into the Switch 2 Remake.
![]()
Not a fan of the options but it's a fun list. No is I guess the simple answer and unsure when I'd get the remake.
![]()
To be totally honest I happen to be playing Ocarina 64 because it's a game for which I, since it's been released, ALWAYS have a playthrough of that I regularly get back to between other releases. So I voted that I'm replaying it but actually I stopped my playthrough when I learned about the remake so I'm somewhere in between.
I'm replaying it now! Though to be fair I was replaying it before the remake was announced.
![]()
I definitely will not be replaying the original before experiencing this remake. I will still play it every once in a while but I am ready for this new retelling. I just hope it measures up to the original in its own unique way.
![]()
no, i already have the game in my 3DS.
![]()
NO. I AM 100% not playing remakes. I have a backlog already... I want new games and experiences. I played this on the n64. I'm good.
![]()
I wish they'd turn the remake into the "Cutting Room Floor" version of OoT. All the beta stuff that got cut (Triforce, Sky Temple), all the N64DD pipedream stuff, etc.
We already have better looking, faithful adaptations in OoT3D and unofficial mods/ports.
Meanwhile, only Nintendo has the secret vault of all the "what could have been" aspects of the original builds and plans.
![]()
I would have preferred to go in fresh, but I 've been playing through it with my kid. We just beat the Spirit Temple, so no point in stopping now.
![]()
I’ve played it so many times on original hardware and the 3DS; I’m not due yet. I’m more likely to replay Windwaker, Twilight Princess, or Skyward Sword. Cautiously optimistic, though if it’s a 1:1 remake, I’m preparing myself to simply enjoy my niece and nephew getting the chance to enjoy it for the first time.
![]()
@Uragaiden I love this idea. I want the same thing done for Windwaker! A few new Temples and more islands! If it’s more of a 1:1 remake, which I’d not prefer, then add surprises that make it fresh for older players, while retaining the classic story and tight design for new players to experience for the first time. This coming from someone who is joyfully replaying Donkey Kong 64. I love the N64 era of gaming and I think many of the best games hold up today—I just want something different for this remake.

I haven't played Ocarina of Time for at least 10 years, so I want to keep that feeling as fresh as possible.
