Portuguese fans have inundated Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes’ latest Instagram post with thousands of comments, urging him to pass the ball more often to Cristiano Ronaldo and accord the veteran striker greater respect ahead of Portugal’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to a report by #FootballTweet on Friday via X , Bruno Fernandes post has attracted more than 20,000 comments, with many supporters expressing frustration over what they perceive as insufficient service to Ronaldo during recent matches.
One standout comment that has gone viral reads “Before stepping onto that pitch, remember the man who opened the door for all of you. Remember that 19-year-old kid who cried after the Euro 2004 final defeat. While everyone else left the pitch, he stayed there, heartbroken, because wearing the Portugal shirt meant everything to him.”
The lengthy message continues by highlighting Ronaldo’s emotional displays at major tournaments, his role in elevating Portuguese football globally, and his two-decade contribution to the national team. It concludes: “This could be his last dance on football’s biggest stage.
The backlash appears tied to Portugal’s recent performances, where fans believe Fernandes and teammates have not adequately supported the 41-year-old Ronaldo, who remains a national icon despite his age.
Reactions on X have been mixed. Some users echoed the fans’ sentiments, with one #Reechmilly stating, “Brrr I almost cried while reading this, everything this person said is So true. He won’t be here in the next 4yrs, just do it for him.”
#AbdullahiLawerl added “Portugal fans are so sickkk man so Bruno is their problem ,” reflecting a more critical take on the fan pressure.
A separate post from #FootballTweet highlighted the scale of the fan response, describing it as “INCREDIBLE” and noting the fury among Portuguese supporters.
The tensions highlight the high expectations on Fernandes, who captains Manchester United and has been a key creative force, amid Ronaldo’s quest for a maiden World Cup title in what could be his final appearance at the global stage.
As Portugal prepares for further matches in the tournament, the online pressure underscores the deep emotional investment fans have in ensuring Ronaldo receives a fitting send-off on the international stage.
