Eve Irvine is pleased to welcome Thibaut Bruttin, Director General and Secretary-General of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), who says, “When a journalist is killed, it is everyone's right to know what is being endangered.” His warning captures the central democratic dilemma explored in this interview marking the United Nations' International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists. As journalists confront lethal violence, imprisonment, political intimidation and increasingly hostile working environments, the struggle for press freedom has become inseparable from a more fundamental question: who controls the public's access to truth? For RSF, press freedom is not simply a journalist's right to speak, but society's right to know.
