SADC Ministers to Convene in Pretoria for Energy and Water Summit

Pretoria, South Africa, is preparing to host a significant regional summit from July 14 to 17, 2026. The event will bring together Ministers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) who oversee portfolios related to energy and water.

The primary objective of this joint ministerial gathering is to formulate collaborative strategies for addressing critical issues impacting the SADC region. Discussions are expected to center on the persistent power deficits experienced across member states.

A key focus of the summit will be the integration of regional power grids. Enhanced grid connectivity is seen as a vital component in improving energy security and reliability throughout the SADC area.

Beyond energy, the meeting will also delve into challenges concerning water resources. Ministers will address strategies aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of water supplies within the region.

Furthermore, the agenda includes the development of comprehensive regional drought response plans. These plans are crucial for mitigating the impact of increasingly frequent and severe dry spells on communities and economies.

The summit underscores a concerted effort by SADC member states to tackle shared environmental and infrastructural hurdles through coordinated action. The outcomes of the four-day meeting are anticipated to shape future regional policies and initiatives in both the energy and water sectors.
