South Africa's DA demotes Steenhuisen in first reshuffle under Hill-Lewis
South Africa's Democratic Alliance has demoted its former leader John Steenhuisen in the party's first cabinet reshuffle under new leader Geordin Hill-Lewis, signalling a shift within the country's second-largest party.
Hill-Lewis confirmed that Steenhuisen, who had served as agriculture minister since the formation of the government of national unity in 2024, would move to a deputy minister role in trade, industry and competition. His removal followed months of pressure over his handling of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.
Willie Aucamp, previously minister of forestry, fisheries and the environment, was named to take over the agriculture portfolio, while David Maynier was lined up to assume Aucamp's former role. Other proposed changes included Alexandra Abrahams moving to deputy minister of electricity and energy, and Yusuf Cassim becoming deputy minister of higher education and training.
The reshuffle is the first significant personnel move by Hill-Lewis since he replaced Steenhuisen as DA leader, and commentators framed it as an effort to stamp his authority on the party.
Because the DA serves in a coalition government, the changes require the cooperation of President Cyril Ramaphosa, who heads the cabinet. Reports indicated the presidency was considering the request, with the adjustments potentially taking effect within weeks.
