South Africa to appeal Zwane's World Cup ban, citing Messi case
South Africa intend to appeal the three-match World Cup ban handed to midfielder Themba Zwane, with coach Hugo Broos arguing the punishment was excessive and inconsistent with other decisions at the tournament.
Zwane was sent off in the 84th minute of South Africa's 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match at the Azteca Stadium on June 11, after he struck Mexico's Roberto Alvarado in the face. FIFA increased what is normally a one-match suspension to three matches, deeming the incident serious foul play.
The length of the ban means Zwane would be unavailable until the round of 16, should South Africa progress that far. With Bafana Bafana having reached the knockout stage, the suspension deprives the side of an experienced attacking option at a crucial point in the competition.
Broos questioned the severity of the sanction and pointed to Lionel Messi, who he said avoided punishment for what appeared to be a foul during Argentina's 3-0 win over Algeria. The coach argued that similar incidents were being treated differently by the FIFA disciplinary committee.
South Africa's federation is preparing to formally contest the decision. The case has drawn attention to the consistency of disciplinary rulings at the 2026 World Cup, a recurring source of debate among teams and observers during major international tournaments.
