St Ludger Secondary School brings A-Level education closer to Svosve learners

LEARNERS in Svosve communal lands will soon access Advanced Level education closer to home, following the construction of an A-Level block at St Ludger Secondary School under the Constituency Development Fund.
For years, completing Ordinary Level in Svosve communal lands came with another challenge for many learners: finding an affordable school to continue their education at Advanced Level.
With limited local schooling options, some families had to send their children to Marondera and other distant areas, increasing the cost of education and separating learners from their families and communities.
The construction of an A-Level classroom block at St Ludger Secondary School is a relief for learners who will access Advanced Level education at the school next year.
‘’The honourable brought the idea of constructing an A-Level facility, and we agreed to make bricks. He brought all the building materials and builders. Our area did not have a local school offering A-Level, so we are excited about this development because our children can now access affordable secondary education in their own area. The new facility will help retain learners who previously travelled to Marondera to pursue their Advanced Level studies, reducing the financial burden on families while keeping students closer to their communities,’’ SDC Chairperson Mr Shepherd Zenda said.
School authorities say the new facility will help retain learners who previously travelled outside Svosve to pursue their studies, while creating a more direct pathway from Ordinary Level to Advanced Level and, ultimately, tertiary education.
‘’Most of our O-Level graduates were travelling long distances in search of A-Level education because there was no school offering it in our area. Some went as far as Marondera. We are excited that our children will now remain here after completing O-Level and only move away when they pursue college or university education. The school, however, still requires additional infrastructure to support the planned expansion, including two teachers’ houses to accommodate A-Level teachers and a senior science laboratory to strengthen the teaching of Science subjects. Earlier water challenges have been resolved as our school continues to grow,’’ St Ludger Secondary School Headmaster Mr Peter Manjoro said.
Marondera East legislator Honourable Vimbayi Mutokonyi said the project, funded through the Constituency Development Fund, addresses a longstanding gap in the local education system.
‘’I want to thank the Government and President Emmerson Mnangagwa for coming up with solid policies that promote inclusive educational development. We used the Constituency Development Fund to construct this block. An affordable A-Level school was the missing link between O-Level and degree-level education in Svosve communal lands. This school will help ensure students from the local communities enrol at the local university after completing their A Levels.”
Beyond improving access to education, the construction project is also providing opportunities for community members to acquire practical construction skills, with Kushinga Phikelela Technical Training College leading the building works.
