Suliman Carrim awaits bail ruling as separate car theft charges loom

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court is expected to rule on North West businessman Suliman Carrim’s bail application.

Controversial North West businessman Suliman Carrim is expected to learn on Wednesday whether he will be granted bail in a case linked to his alleged failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission.

Carrim was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport earlier this month, as he prepared to board a flight to Saudi Arabia via Dubai.

He faces charges under the Commissions Act for allegedly repeatedly failing to appear before the commission.

Prosecutors have opposed his release saying he is a flight risk, while his lawyers have challenged the State’s argument that he could evade trial.

The court is expected to deliver its decision after hearing the arguments.

Last week, Carrim appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court on charges relating to the alleged theft of vehicles that police suspect were destined for Zimbabwe before being taken to Malawi.

The bail hearing was postponed to Friday.
