Sundowns edge out Marumo Gallants to advance in Carling Knockout Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a place in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals after claiming a narrow 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants, last season’s runners-up.
The Tshwane giants arrived at the encounter under pressure following their unexpected departure from the CAF Champions League.
Head coach Miguel Cardoso responded by making several adjustments to his starting XI as his side looked to deliver a positive result on home soil.
Sundowns enjoyed the majority of possession from the opening exchanges, although Gallants remained disciplined defensively and offered little space for their opponents to exploit.
Iqraam Rayners came close to creating an early breakthrough in the 10th minute when his cross travelled through the penalty area without a teammate making contact.
The hosts eventually found the opening goal after 20 minutes.
Thapelo Morena started the attacking move with a pass to Rayners, who then picked out Siyanda Ndlovu.

Known as Skhwishi, Ndlovu completed the sequence with a clinical finish from a narrow angle to put Sundowns in front.
Gallants struggled to mount a meaningful response before the interval, with Ricardo Goss comfortably dealing with Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo’s effort.
Cardoso introduced Aubrey Modiba and Marcelo Allende at half-time, replacing Fawaz Basadien and Thabo Cele. Sundowns continued to dictate the pace of the contest, forcing Gallants to spend extended periods chasing the ball.
However, the visitors threatened an equaliser shortly before the hour mark when Samkele Sihlali took advantage of a brief defensive lapse. Goss produced an excellent stop to preserve his side’s lead.
Sundowns held firm until the final whistle, ending Gallants’ cup campaign and booking their place in the last eight.
The quarter-final draw is scheduled for Wednesday, when Sundowns will learn their next opponents.
