Suspended SAPS sergeant Fannie Nkosi has formally resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS), reportedly submitting his resignation ahead of his disciplinary hearing.

The police have reportedly confirmed receiving Nkosi's resignation letter.

Sources said he submitted the letter on Friday.

Nkosi faces criminal charges, including theft, fraud and defeating the ends of justice, following a raid at his Pretoria North home.

Firearms, ammunition, police dockets and R52 700 in cash were reportedly recovered during the operation.

His case was postponed to November 5 for the outcome of representations submitted to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Nkosi also faces a separate case in Venda, Limpopo, linked to a November 2022 drug bust in Thohoyandou, where police seized dagga, illegal firearms and explosives.

Prosecutors alleged that months after the bust, Nkosi went to the Thohoyandou police station and falsely presented himself as a colonel sent from SAPS head office.

He allegedly used this claim to obtain the original case docket before returning to remove the confiscated dagga from police custody.

Investigators later discovered that evidence bags containing the drugs had been tampered with.

The exhibits were eventually booked in at the head office, according to the allegations. Nkosi was a sergeant attached to the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, giving him access to highly sensitive case files and ongoing investigations.

The raid at Nkosi's house followed his explosive eight-day testimony at the Madlanga Commission (where he was initially protected under the pseudonym "Witness F") earlier this year. Judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga stripped him of his protected pseudonym and ordered him to testify publicly in March 2026 for several clear reasons including accidental exposure, CCTV footage of him leaving a scene carrying a suspicious paper bag, and his failed legal interdict at the High Court to block the commission from reading his decrypted WhatsApp messages and to protect his identity.

Nkosi is still behind bars after being denied bail several times now.
