The Long Hull: Karl Bushby reflects on perseverance & 'best of humanity' on his 28-year journey home

Speaking to FRANCE 24's François Picard shortly after his emotional homecoming, Bushby reflects on an undertaking that resembles a modern-day Odyssey, although the defining obstacles were often more geopolitical than mythological.
"Not so many giant Cyclops, but giant bureaucratic problems and hurdles to overcome," he remarks, capturing with characteristic humour the challenges of traversing a world divided by national boundaries and competing geopolitical interests.

From the treacherous crossing of the frozen Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia to his marathon swim across the Caspian Sea and, finally, the English Channel, Bushby's expedition reveals a striking paradox: while physical geography presented formidable challenges, political geography frequently proved the more insurmountable obstacle. His achievement depended as much on diplomatic negotiation and international cooperation as on strength, stamina, ingenuity and resilience.
Yet perhaps the most revealing dimension of his account concerns the people he encountered. Bushby emphasises the kindness of perfect strangers, the support of communities and the assistance of governments. His experience offers a powerful counterpoint to narratives of a fragmented and distrustful world, suggesting that cooperation can emerge even across profound political and cultural divides. His return also raises deeper questions about identity and belonging.
After nearly three decades abroad, Bushby acknowledges that Great Britain almost feels like discovering a whole new country, transformed by time just as he has been transformed by both time and travel.
After travelling around the world for nearly three decades, he now embarks on a brand new journey on his return home.
