Two women have died and five other people have been injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on the N1 near Kranskop in Limpopo, prompting the temporary closure of the northbound carriageway.
The crash, which involved four vehicles – three sedans and an SUV – occurred in the Waterberg District between Kranskop and the Modimolle off-ramp.
According to preliminary reports, the collision began when a seven-seater Toyota Rumion and a Kia sedan crashed head-on.
A second head-on collision followed when other motorists apparently attempted to avoid the initial crash. This involved a Kia Picanto and an Audi.
Two women were declared dead at the scene.
Three people – two men and a woman – sustained serious injuries, while another man was critically injured and was awaiting evacuation by helicopter. A further woman sustained minor injuries.
The N1 northbound has been closed from the Kranskop Toll Plaza, with traffic being diverted along the R33 through Modimolle before joining the R101.
The accident scene remains active, with emergency services and other stakeholders attending to the incident.
Motorists travelling in the area have been urged to exercise extreme caution, follow the diversion signs and prepare for delays.
Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
