Vehicles removed from Strand beach as officers confiscate 58 alcohol units

Law Enforcement officers confiscated alcohol on Beach Rd and in the Strand CBD (Ward 83) on 7 December 2025.

Vehicles parked on the sand and beachgoers drinking in public led to an enforcement swoop at Strand beach on Voting Day, with officers issuing fines and confiscating alcohol.

Wayne Dyason, spokesperson for Law Enforcement, told IOL Media that a Regional Law Enforcement Inspector spotted a social media post showing vehicles on the beach just after 4pm on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

“Officers were requested to investigate, with the first vehicle arriving at 4.28pm,” said Dyason.

Dyason added: “A complaint was received via the Law Enforcement control room just after 5pm, but by then officers were already addressing the complaint.”

He confirmed that officers from other units, including LEAP officers, were pulled in to assist.

“These officers were part of the Local Government Election enforcement operation and were redeployed to assist on the beach,” he said.

Dyason said fines were issued and the vehicles removed, while alcohol was seized.

“Vehicles were removed from the beach and 58 units of alcohol were confiscated,” he said.

The sight of uniforms sent many beachgoers running, according to Dyason.

“Most beachgoers abandoned their alcohol when they noticed Law enforcement officers' presence on the beach,” he said.

Ward 83 councillor Carl Punt confirmed to IOL Media that the community had flagged illegal parking on the beach sand and made it clear that it would not be tolerated.

“That is not allowed and will not be allowed,” said Punt.

Punt confirmed that several services responded, including 5 NSOs in his ward.

He said the drinking was a separate offence from the parking.

“People were also drinking there, which is illegal in a public space.”

Punt also pointed to the pressure on the day, with authorities stretched by the elections.

“4th of November was a very busy day, as we were all focusing on the elections, and we had to shift focus to the incident at the beach,” he said.

The Strand incident follows a much bigger flare-up just over a month ago. Between 3,000 and 4,000 young people descended on Clifton and Camps Bay beaches on Saturday, 3 October.

That gathering ended in five arrests and 64 fines, with about 1,000 units of alcohol confiscated. Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a 16-year-old was arrested for drunk driving after an accident involving a City law enforcement vehicle. Four others, aged 17 and 18, were arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer.
