Villa drop legal action threat against Carragher

Aston Villa have dropped their threat of legal action against Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.
On Friday, Villa had said they would initiate legal action against the former England defender for what they described as "unacceptable insults" made by Carragher on the Stick to Football podcast.
The former Liverpool defender linked Villa boss Unai Emery with replacing Michael Carrick at Manchester United and told fans to 'shut up' in response to their criticism of him.
Carragher apologised on Saturday for using "clumsy and wrong" language, and said his comments were "tongue in cheek".
Though Villa never initiated legal action against Carragher, they have now ended their threat to do so following his apology.
Emery, who joined Villa in 2022, has transformed the club's fortunes. The Spaniard has helped the club from battling relegation to Champions League regulars, while he also guided them to Europa League victory in 2026.
Carragher, though, suggested that Emery would want to manage a 'giant' club again, having previously managed Paris St-Germain and Arsenal.
"There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not," said Carragher.
"So Real Madrid will take Manchester United's best player, they did it with [Cristiano] Ronaldo. And there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they'll take their players or manager.
"Aston Villa will never be Manchester United."
Posting on social media on Saturday, Carragher retracted his comments.
"I'd like to apologise to Aston Villa, the owners and their fans," the pundit wrote.
"My language this week was clumsy and wrong.
"I can assure Villa fans it was tongue in cheek but I can understand it's not come across that way, so apologies."
Analysis: Symbolic rather than serious
It always seemed a more symbolic threat than one which would ever be followed through.
Carragher, while letting himself down with language, merely expressed an opinion and not a particularly extraordinary one.
While it shows naivety towards Emery's situation and the control he has at Villa it was hardly something to make headlines over.
It was one Villa should have let wash over them but not for the first time this season - or indeed in previous years - the club has chosen a combative position towards the media. Although, if owner Nassef Sawiris wants to do something there is very little some can do to change his mind.
Villa and Sawiris were defending their honour, as is their right, and they saw it as a slight on their ambition and how they could be perceived as lesser than United.
The idea of the traditional big six is one which irritates Villa, especially having won the Europa League and reached the Champions League for two of the past three seasons.
They have competed against those traditional sides - Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham - and have outperformed some of them at times. The threat towards Carragher was a sign of their determination to be seen as equals, even if it was misguided.
