WATCH: Alcohol thief who returns every Thursday nabbed with bottles of Jägermeister in underwear

A “habitual” alcohol thief, who allegedly frequented a liquor store in Tongaat every Thursday, stealing expensive bottles of alcohol and sweets, has been nabbed.

The robbery was captured on the liquor store’s CCTV cameras.

“The 32-year-old man was apprehended after he was found with two bottles of Jägermeister and five packets of liquorice sweets in his underwear,” said Prem Balram, head of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).

He said the manager of the store advised that CCTV footage had captured the man stealing alcohol on several occasions.

“The man fled after stealing two bottles of Jägermeister and five packets of liquorice sweets. RUSA officers spotted him near the liquor store, and when he was apprehended, he was found with the items in his underwear. 

“The man claimed that the sweets were stolen from another business. He was escorted back to the store, where CCTV footage showed him concealing the items. 

“He allegedly admitted to visiting the premises every Thursday to steal. He was handed over to the Tongaat SAPS for further investigation,” Balram added.

He said just before the festive season and Valentine’s Day, theft of alcohol, chocolates, and sweets usually increases.

He warned that liquor stores should alert their staff members to be vigilant.
