Zuma’s India Meeting with Gupta Sparks Government Outrage

Former South African president Jacob Zuma met with fugitive businessman Ajay Gupta during a trip to India, an encounter that has ignited a political storm. The meeting took place at an event where Zuma was also seen alongside the South African High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal. According to reports, Zuma used the occasion to declare his intention to seek office again.
The gathering provoked strong rebukes from members of the South African government. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni condemned the encounter, stating that Zuma and Sooklal were “showing the middle finger” to South Africans by hobnobbing with a figure accused of corruption. Ntshavheni added that the diplomat would face action for his participation.
Officials said the meeting revived anger over a long‑standing corruption scandal linked to the Gupta family and allegations of state capture that dominated South African politics a decade ago. The scandal had previously led to investigations and public protests over alleged undue influence on state affairs.
Source coverage noted that Zuma’s visit to India reignited public frustration about the unresolved graft case, with critics arguing that the encounter undermines efforts to address past wrongdoing. The minister’s remarks underscored the government’s view that the meeting was a deliberate affront to citizens still concerned about accountability.
While the reports do not detail any supportive reactions from Zuma’s allies, they emphasize that the official response has been uniformly critical. The government’s stance is that such interactions with individuals facing corruption charges are unacceptable and warrant disciplinary measures.
Looking ahead, Minister Ntshavheni indicated that the High Commissioner will face consequences for his involvement, suggesting that further administrative steps may follow. The episode is expected to fuel ongoing debates about how South Africa deals with its historical corruption legacy and the conduct of former leaders on the international stage.
