Alstom-led consortium wins €690m deal to modernise Egypt's railways
An Alstom-led consortium has signed contracts worth around €690 million to modernise two of Egypt's strategic railway corridors, in a major upgrade of the country's transport infrastructure.
The agreements, signed with Egyptian National Railways, cover the 6th of October–Alexandria corridor and the Belbes–10th of Ramadan line. The consortium also includes Rowad Modern Engineering and Concrete Plus, with Alstom's share of the deal valued at roughly €300 million.
The larger package, the 6th of October–Alexandria corridor, is valued at approximately €550 million, while the Belbes–10th of Ramadan project is worth about €140 million. As consortium leader, Alstom will handle the engineering, design, supply, testing and commissioning of new digital railway systems across both corridors.
The upgrades include European Train Control System Level 1 signalling, modern telecommunications, reinforced power infrastructure and new operations control capabilities. The works are intended to improve safety, increase capacity and enhance reliability across the network.
Officials say the modernisation will cut full-route travel times by nearly 80 minutes, supporting Egypt's wider push to expand and upgrade its transport links. The investment reflects continued international interest in major infrastructure projects across North Africa.
