Mbappé becomes France's all-time top scorer in win over Senegal
Kylian Mbappé became France's all-time leading goalscorer with a two-goal display as Les Bleus opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Senegal.
Playing at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on June 16, the Real Madrid forward first equalled Olivier Giroud's national record of 57 goals with a first-time finish from a Michael Olise pass in the second half. He then moved clear on 58 with a long-range strike in stoppage time to seal the result.
The brace also lifted Mbappé to 14 goals at World Cups, leaving him two behind the all-time tournament record held by Miroslav Klose and level with Lionel Messi, who scored a hat-trick in Argentina's win over Algeria. Bradley Barcola was also on target for France.
Senegal, one of Africa's strongest sides, pulled a goal back through substitute Ibrahim Mbaye, a teenager widely tipped as a rising star, but could not find an equaliser against a France team that controlled long stretches of the game.
The victory set France up well in Group I and reinforced Mbappé's status as one of the defining players of his generation. Attention now turns to whether he can close the gap on Klose's World Cup scoring record as the tournament progresses.
