Amad Diallo's late winner gives Ivory Coast victory over Ecuador
Ivory Coast opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 win over Ecuador, sealed by a 90th-minute strike from substitute Amad Diallo.
The Manchester United winger came off the bench early in the second half and settled a tightly fought Group E contest, side-footing home after a driving run down the right by Wilfried Singo. The goal arrived deep into the match after both sides had gone close.
The result ended Ecuador's 19-game unbeaten streak and delivered Ivory Coast their first World Cup victory in 12 years. It was a hard-earned reward in a game of fine margins: Ecuador struck the woodwork three times and Ivory Coast also hit the frame of the goal, with the teams combining for 27 shots.
The win set a positive tone for the Elephants in a competitive group that also featured Germany, Ecuador and debutants Curaçao. Diallo's decisive contribution underlined the value of Ivory Coast's attacking depth.
The victory formed part of a strong opening for African teams at the expanded 2026 tournament, where several sides from the continent made early statements. Ivory Coast would go on to progress from the group, reaching the knockout rounds for the first time.
