ANC loses 28 seats in new City of Joburg metro council allocation

Home |
The African National Congress (ANC) has suffered a significant decline in the new City of Johannesburg Metro Council, securing 63 seats, down 28 from the 2021 Local Government Elections.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is the biggest gainer, with 91 seats, but this is still far short of the 136 needed to take control. Action SA remains a significant player with 44 seats, while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) lost 12 seats, leaving them with 17.
The uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party, in their first shot at council seats, have been allocated 15. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) maintained its seven seats, and three parties – the Patriotic Alliance (PA), the Freedom Front (FF) Plus and Rise Mzansi, have five each.
