ANC warns of fake R300 giveaway scam ahead of 2026 elections
The ANC has warned voters about a fake R300 giveaway circulating online and falsely linked to its 2026 local government election campaign, urging the public not to click suspicious links.
The African National Congress (ANC) has warned the public about a fraudulent message claiming to offer an instant free R300 as part of its 2026 local government election campaign, saying it has not authorised or launched any such giveaway.
ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu said the public should not click links accompanying the message, respond to it or share it, warning that the scam could expose people to financial loss, identity theft and the misuse of personal information.
“The public must not click the accompanying link or links, respond to the message or share it with others. Do not provide your identity number, banking details, card information, passwords or one-time PINs,” she said.
The party also cautioned the public against making payments or paying a processing fee to claim the supposed R300.
“Legitimate organisations will not ask for sensitive banking information or one-time PINs through unsolicited messages,” Bhengu said.
The ANC condemned the use of its name to exploit people through false promises, saying the scam could undermine public trust.
It urged members of the public to verify information through its official communication platforms before believing or sharing it.
Anyone who has clicked the link, submitted personal information or disclosed banking details should contact their bank immediately through its official contact channels, the ANC advised.
Those affected should monitor their bank accounts and statements closely, change compromised passwords and report suspicious transactions to law enforcement without delay.
The party called on the public to report fraudulent messages, fake accounts and suspicious links to the relevant online platforms and law-enforcement authorities.
It also urged people not to forward the fraudulent offer, even when intending to warn others about it.
“Protect yourself and your community. Verify before you share, do not click suspicious links, never disclose passwords or one-time PINs, and never pay to receive a promised benefit,” said Bhengu.
