Apple acknowledges iPhone Duo display ‘issue’ after reports of cracked screens

Following reports of iPhone Duos with cracked and broken inside screens, often showing a bright line running from the center to the right side, Apple says in a statement to Bloomberg and 9to5Mac that it’s aware of “an issue impacting the inner display” on a “small number of iPhone Duo units.” If your iPhone Duo is affected, Apple says to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Here is the full statement, which Apple’s Alex Kirschner shared with The Verge:
> The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Kirshner says most units aren’t susceptible and that the issues appear quickly on units with the defect.
Shortly after launch, iPhone Duo users started reporting similar issues where the hinge would tighten, and opening the device caused a crack and the distinctive bright lines on the display. One user in Australia said that an Apple Store replaced their unit “on the spot.”
This weekend, iFixit published its teardown of the phone and gave its perspective on why some phones might be cracking. Where the damage has been happening, iFixit shows how the foldable screen might be pushing against a center bar.

The Verge has contacted Apple about the reports, but has not received an on-the-record response about the issues with these new phones. They’re some of the first devices to launch after new CEO John Ternus took over from Tim Cook.
