FIFA Overturns Folarin Balogun’s Suspension Ahead of Belgium Clash

Folarin Balogun, a striker for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), will be available for the team's upcoming round of 16 match against Belgium this Monday. The decision follows a move by FIFA to lift a one-game suspension that had previously sidelined the player.
The ban was originally issued after Balogun received a red card during the United States' 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Under standard regulations, the red card would have barred him from participating in the critical knockout stage game against Belgium.
However, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee announced a delay of the one-game ban in an unusual turn of events. This decision allows the striker to return to the lineup for the Monday fixture.
Reports indicate that the reversal occurred after U.S. President Donald Trump held a conversation with FIFA President Gianni Infantino. This reported intervention by the American president has sparked a heated controversy within the tournament.
The sudden change in status caught some of Balogun's teammates by surprise. Reacting to the news that the suspension had been lifted, some USMNT players admitted, "I think a lot of us thought it was AI at first."
The situation has created a divide as the tournament continues, with the reported political involvement in a disciplinary matter causing a "furious row" among participants and observers.
While the USMNT now has their striker available for the match, the decision remains a point of contention due to the nature of the intervention. The team now prepares to face Belgium with Balogun eligible to play.
