Final KwaZulu-Natal results to determine municipal coalition options
KZN awaits final election results as coalition stakes rise
The battle for control of KwaZulu-Natal’s municipalities is set to enter a decisive phase on Sunday evening as the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is expected to announce the final election results and seat allocations.
The announcement at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban is expected to take place at about 7.30pm following the national announcement, providing a clearer picture of the political balance across the province’s municipalities.
The MK Party has been leading the provincial results board, followed by the IFP, ANC and the DA according to seat allocation.
The final seat allocation is expected to determine which parties have secured outright majorities and where coalition negotiations will be necessary to form municipal governments.
KwaZulu-Natal’s largest municipality, eThekwini, is among the key councils in focus, with its outcome expected to have significant implications for the province’s political landscape.
The IEC is expected to provide details of the final provincial results, including the distribution of municipal seats, following days of vote counting, auditing and the processing of objections.
