Huge loss for Trump as Democrats take control of Congress

President Donald Trump has been lashing out on Truth Social as Republicans suffer defeat at a staggering scale in the US midterm election and ceded control of both chambers of Congress to the Democrats.

Republicans not only lost seats in closely contested areas in both the Senate and House, but they also lost in strongly Republican states like Texas and South Carolina, a development that is now described as the blue tsunami.
They also lost districts they had redrawn to their advantage and expected to win easily.
The Democratic Party is estimated to have won the majority in the Senate with 54 seats to 43 for the Republicans as of the time of this report. In the House, the Democrats have 228 seats to 137 for the Republicans.
More votes are still coming in, and many seats have yet to be called as of Wednesday morning.
The Democratic Party flipped six Republican-held Senate seats the party needed to claim the majority, winning races in Texas, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, North Carolina, and South Carolina, where the president had personally chosen the nominees or tried to rally voters on their behalf with campaign stops.
Democratic control of Congress will reshape Mr Trump’s final two years in office and hamstring his legislative agenda.

The election will give congressional democrats greater oversight powers, allowing them to launch investigations, scrutinise executive decisions and challenge the administration’s priorities.
The administration would face greater resistance to its policy proposals, making it more difficult to pass major legislation on issues such as immigration, taxation, healthcare and federal spending.
The midterms also made clear that voters were unhappy with high prices, the war with Iran, and government corruption.
Mr Trump himself admitted that the Iran war played a role in his party’s midterm losses.
The president said voters were probably unwilling to accept the short-term consequences of petrol and diesel prices, largely caused by the Iran war he started.
“I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I’ve done with Iran,” he told Fox News.

The president also told the New York Times that he would accept the results of the elections.
On Truth Social, the American leader said he would become a “Political Pundit, both good and bad, on the reasons these Candidates won and lost!”
In another post, he shared an image of himself wearing a red face cap bearing the inscription “VETO,” referencing his earlier remark about using his veto power to block legislation he is opposed to but passed by Congress.
